OLC Problems

There are also serious time zone and calendar issues as a result of
javascript errors, which requires multiple steps to get around. But
apparently it is more important to the OLC team to provide a google
earth link than fix their bugs. Can't even use olc to review other's
flights anymore...
It's about time that someone with spare time and talent will develope a
US alternative to olc, without all the hassles and politics.

Don't bother to contact the OLC admins in Europe -- I have 4 flights

Recently, the website seems to be down every evening in the USA --
almost like the people in Europe turn off the server when they go to

There is a problem with the OLC production server crashing, and they
have not been able to reproduce the problem on the development server,
so this will be a difficult problem to fix. In the mean time, it has to
be manualy rebooted when it crashes. The OLC team does get an SMS
message whenever this happens, so there is no need to notify them; but
someone has to be near a computer to fix it. Naturally if it happens
late at night, it does not get fixed until the next morning (German
time).

There are also problems in the scoring algorithm causing some flights
to get zero score. As the problems are fixed, the flights will be
re-scored, as some have been already, so please be patient. Keep
claiming your flights, since they can't be fixed if they are not
submitted by the Tuesday 24:00 local deadline.

At least one nation has done it already, others have never joined the
OLC movement.

But is the world gliding community sufficiently powerful that we can
allow it to split it into many small communities?

In the US I find the calendar defaults to tomorrow's date, so I often
initially get a "no flights to report" notice.

Also, since there are apparently Javascript problems with their
calendar, using the mouse to select a new date does not usually work.
I have found that this bug can be avoided by using the upper calendar
arrows to move the date back a year and then return forward a year.
This seems to enable the mouse to select the desired date in the
calendar.

..... as I have said before regarding OLC2, avoiding these sorts of
problems is why we have "beta tests" before a production release.

We in the northern hemisphere are in our low season, pity our poor
brothern in the southern hemisphere entering their prime season with a
busted OLC.

Hey, It worked!

Logged on this morning, checked out a flight down under via Google maps
(and the default map is better, too), then went back and found my
flight back on Oct 22 had finally been scored (not much, but a start).

Ok, I feel better now.

Keep up the good work, OLC gang - and just ignore (well, listen a
little) the whiners (yours truly included) - it's our grumpy season
now...

It does work, but like SAP, you have to do it their way. Simply adapt your
habits, processes and products to their code and all will be well.

So far so good - I have been able to log on every time I tried (same timezone as
Germany). Now if the weather would just improve enough that there was a flight
worth uploading...

The calendar is working today.

The 'suggested initial date' displayed will always be Euro time I
suspect until their scripts can detect local time zones, but a single
click on a calendar day with claimed flights now works.

Patience is the key. They had to get it running to take in new flight
logs, that's priority one. And how do you test this in a volunteer
development environment with the volume of countries, langauges and
Internet frailities? The testing they DID do must have worked before we
saw anything public.

Next they worried about auto claiming from SeeYou, Strepla, etc. I bet.
And those folks are responding, and again volume use draws out bugs,
and those will be fixed.

We are told that the regional results will return, as will Novice class
or whatever your country had before.

The Google Earth link may seem a frill, but my guess is the volunteer
who took on that component got it working before the other requirements
were ready. This feature is certainly one we can all use to promote
interest in our sport, and it's just plain fun to see flights from
around the world in such terrain detail. Whether they use the paved
strip or the grass! You can even decide whether the outlanding pilot
chose the best field (for when the imagery was taken anyway) ! My guess
is that by mid summer 2007 the complaints here will focus on what
country or state has the best or worst resolution in Google Earth!

It's free, it's fun, it's addictive. The proof of that is in the posts
showing frustration with getting a flight posted.

Let's give them support and suggestions and maybe reduce the anger a
notch or two. You know how you can feel as a club volunteer when
someone thinks your contributions are less than perfect.

Great work OLC and the volunteers in every country, and continued
success! ....Bringing more fun to an already fun sport!
