Default Please help me choose a handheld VHF NAV/COM

I have an older ICOM A-22 and use it every weekend flying gliders. I have
used it for powered flight to pick up ATIS etc prior to engine start. Works
great.

I have not attempted to use the ICOM in powered aircraft in flight. But I do
have the headset adapter for it if my comms ever fail.

I have attempted to use the VOR function with little success. The "rubber
ducky" antenna is just not enough while inside the airplane. I've been told
that they work great if connected to an external antenna.

If I had to replace it, I'd pick ICOM. I've known others who have had the
Vertex or "Sportys" (JRC) and dumped them for an ICOM.

I'm looking for a VHF Nav/Com handheld. I will primarily be using it
as a backup, with occasional use on-field, out of the plane.

Since it'll mostly sit in my flight bag, I'd really like to use
alkaline batteries, for battery shelf life. The option to use a
rechargeable pack would be nice, but not a top requirement. In the
plane, I'd like to plug a standard, dual plug headset in, adaptors are
OK.

I've looked at Vertex, Icom, and several other units. I can't find a
Sporty's locally to inspect. The prices and feature lists seem to be
all over the place.

What do you like and dislike about the handheld(s) you own?

I haven't found a lot of user comparisons via Google.

Thanks!
Barry
