new SSA web site
I received the new web site announcement email from the SSA on April 1 saying that in the next 24 hours I would get a link to reset my password. It is now April 7 and nothing thus far (yep, I checked spam). Reading above it seems others have received the link. Am I the only one left in the cold? Out of curiosity I clicked on the Login button (upper right) and all I see is the "Not a member, want to join?" message.
- Yes, the rollout should have been done in the fall, not in the spring, so as not to impact the heart of the soaring season. - Yes, the first "public" incarnation should have been via an alternate URL.. - Yes, the denizens of RAS should have collectively been asked to test and make comments. - Yes, the password should not need to be 12 digits long. This is not a bank or the NSA. It's ok to require a special character, upper case, number, etc. - Yes, impacting low speed access users is bad. Every event I have been to has low speed internet. - Yes, needing two logins is strange. Must be a two phased rollout. - Yes, captcha is an annoyance. Hopefully, a cookie is set to remember that I am one of the good guys. - Yes, not being able to click "Remember me" at login is bad. My $0.02. - John (OHM) |

Go to the "Home Page" and you will now be in the old SSA website links (the underlay to the new webpage) and will be able to find info you are familiar with across the board - the "old" racing menu, records, calendar, Johnson Report access, etc. As time goes on, the front page should eventually provide a smooth interface to all this. With newfangled web programming it may look different to different viewers, but I don't see a membership "tab". In the drop-down menu (the three lines icon in the upper right) there is a "membership" entry. If I click on it I get a page with nothing useful. If instead I click on the drop-down arrow on the right end of that "membership" line, I see "Members Only Resources". If I click on that, it drops down a submenu of three items: Soaring mag, member locator, and sailplane directory. I don't see "Member Services" anywhere. And in any case, why build a "new website" that is just an annoying overlay over the old website? If anybody's listening, here's what I'd like to see: * a "site map" page with links only (no "media") * one login that gets you to *everything* * an option to "remember me" so you don't have to login every time * let me choose a short password I can remember * no "Captcha" I did the following: Go to https://members.ssa.org/login.asp. This asks for member ID and password.* My information is the same as it has been for years. ID is my membership number and then my old password. This gets to SSA Member Resources. Select My Home Page That gets to much of the original SSA home page. Not all the links are there, but the ones important to me, and contest pilots, are all there and functional. Some things have not worked. When I have found glitches I have advised Frank Whiteley. He has been very responsive in trying to get them resolved. When a few of us were consulted last Fall we advised not to mess with the stuff deeper in the site that works because that all is very involved and no doubt beyond what the web site developer consultant will be able to do. My advice was to get the new face working with absolutely the least effect on the underlying functions as possible. It appears that the current situation does the latter. FWIW UH Thanks Hank.* That does work for me.* I've now bookmarked that login page, and also this one in case it remembers my login: https://members.ssa.org/MyHome.asp Well apparently it does NOT remember my login. Even though this is the "old web site" section, and the real old web site did remember my login. So bookmark the login page UH pointed to. At least my browser remembers my username and password for that login page. And yes "member locator" is under "News", after you go to "my home page". As are "sailplane locator" and "webinars"... |

WOW!!!
I just looked at ssa.org and my head is spinning! I guess you gotta be a teenager with a cell phone grafted to your arm to appreciate that. I tried "Member Locator" under "News" and didn't find it. I finally found the member locator by starting at "members.ssa.org" then "My Home Page" then "News" My original password worked for that. I had said above, 'Out of curiosity I clicked on the Login button (upper right) and all I saw was the "Not a member. Join today!" message'. This was using Chrome on an Android phone.
I tried it again on a PC. When I hover over the Login button it shows the "Not a member..." message. But when I click on the Login button I go right to the Login web page (https://www.ssa.org/wp-login.php). The confusion is when using a cell phone there is no such thing as hovering.. Thus when I clicked on the Login button I get the "Not a member..." message and then I had to click another time on the Login button to get to the Login web page (https://www.ssa.org/wp-login.php). PS - I was able to login to both the new way (had to reset my password) and the old way to get to http://members.ssa/org and all the good stuff. No Captcha was required. - John (OHM) |

I just got an email from that says we must reset our password before using the new site. Apparently they sent a link to do this out last Friday but many people did not get it. So they sent it again: https://www.ssa.org/my-account/lost-password/
Clicking on that it was immediatly blocked by my ad blocker, Ublock Origin. It says that the website is also opening "icptrack.com". Googling that tells me that " This address is a tracker for a mass email sender." Now why does the SSA need to TRACK who clicks on this link? Another comment found says that "WARNING: Caution. This site participates in fraud and scam. The site is listed, verified and confirmed as a phish on PhishTank. http://www.phishtank.com/index.php " Come on SSA, you can do better than this! |

I just got a reply from the SSA (Alexa Owens) and she apoligized and sent me this link: https://www.ssa.org/my-account/lost-password/
which looks identical to me to the one they sent. But somehow, this one does not have the Tracking problem the first one had. Maybe they shut off the tracking requirement?? |

So have others been successful in setting up a password per the instructions sent out today? I've tried 4 times now over the last 2 hours and I've yet to receive a password reset responder email. Yes, I've looked in spam and nothing is there either. Robert |

A personal view from across the pond: Have you (Soartech) passed this information on to SSA, just as I would pass similar information to the BGA? If not, you should do so, because they need to take steps to get off the phishtank.com list and would be well advised to get off anything like icptrack.com as well - unless, of course, they're planning to raise some cash by spamming or letting others pay to do so. Personally, I take a dim view if spammers and run Spamassassin at home to (a) bin spam automatically and (b) to keep tabs on those who try to spam me. But of course ymmv. -- Martin | martin at Gregorie | gregorie dot org |
