Of course it has to be the correct card type.

Are there even generic card readers available for the card types that the
GNS430 database requires? These cards, unlike the B/K KLN database cards,
appear to be proprietary to me.

Good question. I have not determied what type card it is yet.
However, it does appear on the outside to be the same as those in the
Garmin 250 XL(?). Aircraft Spruce sells a reader for whatever type
card that is for about $40 USD. It is not a Compact Flash, SD or xD
card.

Not sure about the 430 but the G1000 appears to be SD cards. However,
I've not tried to pull one out.

I just pulled an SD card out of my IPAQ to verify that they are not
identical (GNS 430 card). The AS&S item that supports StreetPilot,
ColorMap, eMap and GPSMap 295 is part # 11-00553. I was incorrect
about the 250 XL but will verify the unit that I compared cards with
today.

AFAICT, the Jepp software which writes the updates requires the Jepp
programmer's firmware to function.

The G1000 version works with standard off-the-shelf Sandisk readers
and SD cards though.

That's because it was done by the ex-apollo guys. The MX20 used a
CF card and the MX200 uses a SD card. It has a copy of the windows
file system on it for the MX20 (it's running NT4.0). The 480 also
uses a standard card / filesystem. Both my units came with a sandisk
reader though my little PCCard reader also works fine.

The 430/530 have a goofy proprietary format.

I just found out that the info I was given yesterday by another pilot
was in error. So it looks like a Jeppesen card reader is the way to
go.
