Default FS2004 won't recognize Sidewinder FF2?

I've tried every USB port of my computer, installed and re-installed
software, let XP pick up the stick w\o the MS software, all to no avail. The
stick works fine in all test procedures, and then, as FS2004 is loading I
can feel the stick go limp. MS troubleshooting advises changing the
controller ID# but there is no such option (at least not where they say it
is: "gaming devices/advanced"). Has anybody got any clue at all? I'm going
mad. Thanks.
WS
