Got a response from Google Groups support:
Thank you for your note. The display problem that you described was caused by a spam attack on several groups. The spammer posted a large number of messages to the groups and then removed them. This resulted in the appearance of gaps in the groups' archive of older posts. Please be assured that no content posts were removed. Regards, The Google Team
