Are there STILL private pilots out there? Why? What's the
attraction, what with airlines, charters, fractionals, etc?

touche'

I hope that was sarcasm, not trolling...

A come back I read a couple of weeks ago was:

Do you mean there are still people that fish? Why, when you can just go
down to the supermarket and buy fish?

Hams are down from their all time high, but not by much. Over 600K, I
think.

It is kinda' like talking to other people via keyboard here. There are
better ways, but the randomness is rather stimulating.

I would think another plus is, you can talk to people worldwide without
having to pay some money-grubbing corporation a monthly fee to do it.

Taxis are horrible in Dayton. The few times I called a taxi, they said
they will be there in 3-4 hours. I decided to walk instead.

There are plenty of airports in the Dayton area with instrument
approaches. In fact, it is one of the highest concentration of airports
I have seen. The problem is not whether they have instrument approaches,
but whether they are authorized as legal alternates.

Thanks for all the tips, guys.
I might try the talk-in freq idea.

Not sure how taxi's are in Dayton. ??
Great in toronto, horrible at PIT, lousy at Cleveland airport unless
you call Westlake cab (off site local company); they treat you right.

Two votes for Stevens FBO...OK! Makes that easy...

Well, I was thinking alt-as in 'other than DAY'...but there aint none.
Guess I'm spoiled here in the Cleveland area. You can't go more than
10 miles here without tripping over an airport or two...most with at
least a VOR-A instrument approach.

I guess I could file ILN as an alternate...but Airborne might be a bit
PO'd if I actually landed there...
May as well make the alternate CMH or CLE...cuz if I can't get to DAY
it dont matter!
If it's much worse than MVFR I probly wont go anyhow. Need to get
the confidence level up first!
Can always drive at the last minute, and park at the mall.

Further suggestions welcome!

TROLL, (2 points)

Why build your own plane. In fact, why spend all that money flying around in little toy planes. Way cheaper to fly commercial.
