On the Garmin 296/396, I believe that you must hold the "Quit" key while
powering on the unit. Not sure if it's the same on the 196.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "master reset" but I can think of two
ways to dump the current settings. (1) Remove a battery, wait a short while
for all the internal voltages to drain away, then restart the system or, (2)
Perform a "Restore Defaults" on the OPTIONS page.
Can you be more specific about what problem you are trying to cure? For
example, if you just want to clear out a bunch of stuff from the map page,
press the enter key repeatedly until the junk stuff goes away, or you like
what you see.
BTW, Garmin will sell you an operator's manual for a nominal price.

As far as I know it's not in the operators manual, at it is least
not in the manual I got with my 196, but holding the QUIT key and
pressing the power button does the trick. You will see a popup
whether to erase all userdata or not.
