Default Borgelt B50 Help Needed

I am trying to install an older Borgelt B50 (SN9910126) and need some
help. This is an older model than the B50 manuals on the Borgelt web
page.

1. I need a wiring diagram for this older B50. It has a DB15 on the
back.

2. The speaker makes noise even when the tone should be in deadband.
It is cut off (quieter) compared to the normal level but still
audible. I would like to know if anyone else has dealt with this and
if there is a fix.

Thanks,

Tim

E-mails sent on 2/16/2010 and 3/15/2010 with no reply. Usually good
response but nothing so far. Had hoped to have this installed two
months ago but finally have given up on Borgelt to respond.

He answered my email in about 20 minutes just a couple weeks ago.
Are you sure you were using the correct address?
I can try to email him for you if you like.

I second the JS suggestion...he usually returns emails within minutes
and the email address above is the same one that I have been using.

As stated above emails sent to on
2/16/2010 and 3/15/2010 with no reply.

Anyone have a wiring diagram or have dealt with the continuous sound
issue?

I looked at my B50 (sn 0005163, DDM 2167). It does have a DB15 on the
back, which mates with a DB15 mounted on a circuit board. The circuit
board offers a screw terminal strip for wiring connection. Is it
possible that your B50 is simply missing that circuit board?

Theoretically one could conduct a continuity test from the circuit
board DB15 pins to the terminal strip screws to create a mapping.
Then one could theoretically use the wiring diagram from the posted
Borgelt manual to create a mating DB15 cable for your instrument.

Mike Borgelt is probably the only person who could say whether this
might work or not.

Ken

Hi Tim,
Mike will certainly solve your problem once you reach him. He was
very helpful when I had a similar issue. The DB9 on the original B50
is the connection and mount for an open circuit board called a DDS
"Digital D...something.. Module". My B50 had two DB9 cables soldered
to the DDM, one for GPS output labeled "PDA" and one for GPS input
labeled "volklogger". Also soldered to the DDM is a wire running to a
toggle switch for Declare/Flight that mounts on your I/P. The B50 DDM
adds the vario data to the GPS data stream for Winpilot etc. The
first DDMs had screw terminals for a "Y" cable containing the two
DB9's (you can make this easily from a DB9 extension cable), but not
the flight/declare switch. If yours is like mine, let me know off line
and I'll forward the manual, pics of the DDM and wiring showing where
to solder things, etc.

If you have a manual, you may have already read this.

On page 7 of my manual, under "Adjustment of Audio Silent Band in Cruise
Mode", it describes a trimpot in the center of the top circuit board.
Rotating the pot clockwise narrows the deadband, counterclockwise widens
it. It warns that the adjustment is very sensitive, requiring only a few
degrees to make a meaningful difference.

I wonder if your deadband has been narrowed so much as to be non-existent.

Paul,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have not heard from Mike yet, I hope I
will. My B50 appears to be older than most of the units out there.
It does not look the same internally as any of the other three B50's I
have worked on in the past; it does not have the green connector block
near the back of the unit. It does not have a DDM serial number but
the ADU has a serial number of 0001.

The dead band does work, but it just is not completely dead. The
volume is clipped by about 95%, but you can still hear the tone just
much quieter. Also when the volume is completely turned down there is
a hiss from the speaker still. One of the previous owners had it
wired with an on/off switch to the speaker so I am guessing this is
not a new issue.

Thanks,

Tim
