Default Cf-18 Hornet

Hornets in Trenton?

My, my! I have been out of touch . . .

In my day, there were only heavy transport Sqadrons (436, 437, 429 Trg Sqn
and an assortment of others), an AMU (or today, they are calling it 2nd
AMS) unit, of which I used to belong to . . .

There was also an engine repair Squadron located at the North end of the
Base (they made a lot of noise during run ups, especially with F104 engines
and the like).

Oh well . . .

Again, my thanks to you all

Trenton is the home base for the Hornet Hookers They are the boys that
take care of the MAGS and they are deployed a lot.

Thank you all.

How about that! I never thought that an arrestor cable was part of
"safety systems" at a Canadian air Base, especially where the CF-18 are
located . . .

Never saw one at CFB Trenton though . . .

How come?

How come a tail hook on an aircraft that has never seen a carrier?

Is Canada holding out here? does it have a super-secret carrier that no
one knows about?

Please help!

Thanks much

No.

Look at CF-116 Freedom Fighters; they have hooks as well. The CF-188 has a
hook because arrestor systems are used on CF airfields in emergencies.
(All the same, the Ward Room in Halifax has a large display with the hooks
of the Seafire, the Sea Fury and Banshee. There is an open space for the
next CF carrier fighter.

The F-18 is also a carrier based aircraft by design. I assume the
CF-188 tailhook is just the same hook as used by the US Navy? No
spendy redesign to save a little weight for runway arrestor use?

From 1990 thru 1992 I wrote maintenance and flight manuals for the CF-18. As I (dimly) recall, the F-18 was a replacement for the US Navy F-14 Tomcat. Pilots loved the Tomcat, but its maintenance hours to flight hours were astronomical. The F-18 was designed around the Hughes radar in the nose and a primary design goal for the F-18 was Reliability/Maintainability. The F-18 was a Navy aircraft and all Navy aircraft have arrestor hooks. The CF-18s kept the arrestor hooks for two reasons: for emergencies as mentioned elsewhere, and for weight and balance. Both are key reasons to keep the arrestor hooks.
