Default Cessna 180 vs. 182 vs. 185

Hi,

I ran into a pilot who was eagerly describing his 185 amphibian and remember
seeing several wheeled versions and float versions in Fort Simpson a few
years ago. I vaguely recall the (wheeled) 185 being a trike.

How do the 182 and 185 differ?

Marc

185 on wheels is tail wheel configuration;182 is nosewheel
185 usually has 300hp & three bladed prop;182 is 230hp&two blades
185 has a straight tail;
182 since about 1962 models have wider fuselage, and swept tail

there are other differences too.
my 182L is worth about $75k; similarly well-equipped 185 would be $150K.

180 is the narrow fuselage, straight-tail 182 on conventional gear.

You don't remember to pretty good. 185 is a 180 on significant steroids.
Neither have a training wheel. 185 will do things a 182 can't even dream
about.

How do the 182 and 185 differ?

The 185 has conventional gear, has either 260 or 300 hp, depending on the year,
seats 6, can haul over 1600 pounds, and cruises at a bit over 165 mph.

The 182 is a trike, has 230 hp, seats 4, can haul about 1300 pounds, and cruises
at a bit over 155 mph.

Fill the tanks, and the 185 still hauls over a quarter ton. Great bush plane.

Isn't the 185 the predecessor of the 206?

Just done a search...
http://www.skydivestandrews.co.uk/ht...s/facility.htm
says
"The Cessna 185 aircraft is effectively the 'tail dragger' equivalent of a
Cessna 206, and should not be confused with the entirely different Cessna
182."

The 180 came first. Narrow body, 230 HP, tail wheel. Then in '56 came
the 182. It was just the 180 with a nosewheel. In '61 the 185 was
born. It was the same as the 180 with a 260 HP IO-470 engine. Some
structural beef up was included. In '62 the 182 was widened 4 inches.
In '63 the 205 was introduced, it was the 210 with fixed gear, although
at the time it was called the Super Skylane. In '64 Cessna beefed up
the 205 and created the 206. In '65 the 205 was dropped. In '66 the
185 got the 520 for 285 HP as an option, standard in '67.

Bleargh!

So was the 185 ever widened? When did it get 6 seats, or did it always
have 6 seats in certain guises? In the same size plane as a 180? Or as a
later 182? 'eck!

It always had 6. The 180 had 6 after 1963.

Yep.

Or as a later 182?

The 182 is longer and taller, but has the same wingspan.

Never.

Well, like the 182 it had an option for those jokes they call childs seats.

The 180 and the 185 always were and are the same size. Now, they do
have some pretty nice extended baggage areas that can be installed. As
a matter of fact Selkirk Aviation just got an extended baggage for the
wide body 182's STC'd. I'll be doing that to mine, it goes back from
the current rear bulkhead 34 inches.

Huh? 185 has 6 seats...and the rear seats are big enough for a 6"2"
175lb person.
