Where in BC, and what hikes?

Just a couple of very short ones near Victoria: on the west side of
East Sooke Regional Park (I forgot the name of the trail), and from the
China Beach trailhead to Mystic Beach (just past Jordan River). We had
a busy trip, so we weren't able to do anything big...

Any chance your application is being release as
[a combination of donationware &] Open Source?

Eg, still have to donate, but one also has access
to the source code...?

TIA

Greetings GPS fans,

I'm just back from vacation in B.C. (where, unfortunately, the Douglas
firs interfered in a big way with my hiking tracklogs!), but I've still
made some progress on GPS Visualizer lately...

A lot of the changes are "behind the scenes" but should allow for more
interesting stuff in the future (like, I'm still working on a way to
save modified maps, and a stand-alone program for generating
backgrounds), but a couple of things are of interest right now:

* GPSV can now estimate speed and heading, even if your GPS data file
doesn't include that data. (Of course, if you want speed, you'd
better have a file format that includes time!) Slope/grade is
coming soon.

* Pathaway track and waypoint files are supported. (Pathaway is a
commercial GPS application for the Palm OS.)

* Plain-text (tab/comma-delimited) waypoint files are supported;
BUT, the first field in the header row MUST be called "wpt" or
"waypoint," or GPSV will think it's a track file. (The data in
that first column/field is essentially ignored.) This is probably
most useful if you need to manually construct a waypoint file.

I'm always open to further suggestions. A lot of the interesting
features in there now came from ideas from other people...

A summary for the uninitiated: GPS Visualizer is a free (donationware)
web-based program that takes your GPS data -- in the form of GPX files,
IGC files, OziExplorer files, tab- or comma-delimited text files, Cetus
.pdb files, or Pathaway .pdb files -- and generates maps or profiles in
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format. There are many configurable
options, and a number of choices for background maps.

Probably not. For one thing, it makes me nervous, and for another, I
don't think I'm quite organized enough to deal with something like
that. I'm not really a programmer, you know.

I'm happy to share limited information about the guts of GPS
Visualizer... but the truth is, there's really nothing complicated
about it. The trickiest parts are the interactive JavaScript features,
and those functions are all laid bare in the SVG file already.
