Surely by that criteria it was several millenia ago when the first birdman
stepped off a cliff with eagle feathers in his hands and a misplaced

Bzzzt. Several suborbital homebuilt flights were made in the decades
preceeding the Kitty Hawk event. Of course they were unpowered,
uncontrolled, or unmanned (or some combination thereof).
