Default FS2002 modify cfg files, or....

I've got FS'02 and wanted to change how my aircraft are organized
within the game. I've got fighters, bombers, passenger, etc aircraft,
some using the airline name, some the manufacturer's name, some the
model name ahead of the manufacturer's name (or in ways that are
inconsistent with similarly manufactured AC - like "B_777", "B727" &
"707"). In short, I'd like to modify the files so that they exploit
FS'02's wonderful menu system - but the game itself doesn't seem to
allow for editing within the game. I tried to modify the aircraft.cfg
file on one of my planes, but the A/C didn't show up at all. What am
I doing wrong?

suggestions appreciated.
