The purpose of the GPS is to help meet the e911 specification. This

rule
requires the cell provider to be able to determine you position within a
relatively low accuracy if you make a 911 call. Eventually the system

will
be able to locate you within 50 to 100 meters.

Provided you're outside with a good shot at the sky.

BTW, GPS is not the only means of achieving this goal. Other providers

are
looking at different technologies. Check out www.fcc.gov/911/enhanced

for
more info.

GPS is a crappy way to achieve this....they could just as easily use

transmitters
that the cell phone already is set up to receive (otherwise it wouldn't be

able
to make the call). E-OTD is sure to be more reliabile for this.

I relaize this is a very old thread, but I haven't been able to get RAP for
several months on my news server and it finally recognized it's still out
there.

There was a recent news blurb (Early December) that they figure it may be as
long as 10 years before the so called locator service is in wide spread use
with the high accuracy originally claimed..

As I understand it supposedly works with a combination of GPS in the hand
held with the tower applying the correction features.
