Default Santa Monica Airport Runway Change

Santa Monica Airport Runway Change
Notice Number: NOTC7535

Santa Monica Airport (SMO) Runway 3-21 Shortened.

Pilots are advised that Santa Monica Municipal Airport Runway 3-21 is
shortened from 4,973 feet to 3,500 feet, effective Saturday, December
23, 2017 at 0700 Pacific Standard Time.

Those portions of the runway outside of each threshold are now marked
with yellow chevrons, and cannot be used for taxi, takeoff, or
landing, but are clear of obstacles for departure and arrival.

Distance remaining signage will be located at 1000 foot increments, on
the south side of Runway 21.

There are PAPI's for both Runway 21 and Runway 3.

Current airport diagrams may not depict the new taxiway structure
noted below. Corrections will be published in the February 1, 2018
charting cycle.

CHECK NOTAMS TO CONFIRM TAXIWAY LAYOUT AND NECESSARY
AIRPORT SURFACE INFORMATION

Pilots should expect to exit the runway at a designated stub taxiway.
These taxiways from west to east a

A1/B1- New taxiway location

A2/B2- Existing taxiways

A3/B3- New taxiway location
A4/B4- Existing taxiways; renamed
A5/B5- New taxiways

There are no longer "all hard-surface" areas where aircraft may turn
off the runway at any point between the runway lights. All runway
exits must be made at the new stub taxiways of B1 through B5 on the
south side and A1 through A5 on the north side.
DO NOT EXIT THE RUNWAY BETWEEN MARKED TAXIWAY STUBS

Temporarily, the run up areas on the east side of the airport will be
other than as noted on charts. The previous South East run up area
will remain in effect. Pilots can expect to get taxi clearance to the
old South East run up area and THEN a separate taxi clearance to the
runway once the run up is complete.

On the west side of the airport, run up areas are cut outs in the
infield area between A3 & A2 and B3 & B2

When the new run up areas are constructed, they will be abeam A5 and
B5. These will be movement areas.

Pilot should also expect new approach hold areas on Taxiways A and B
in the Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest corners of the
airport to protect for certain arrivals under IFR weather conditions.
Controllers will provide hold short instructions when appropriate.
(See AIM 2-3-5)

Example: Cessna 12345 hold short of Runway 21 approach."

Pilots are expected to read back these hold short instructions and
hold at the marked locations until cleared beyond them by ATC. Failure
to do so may result in a runway incursion.

From December 23, 2017 until February 1, 2018, only the VOR-A and
visual approaches will be available at Santa Monica Municipal airport.
