Default A Canadian tries formation flight over DC ADIZ

With all the reports now coming out about how close that Cessna came to
getting smoked over Washington, it got me thinking. When the governor
of Kentucky flew into D.C. in his King Air with a dead transponder, it
caused all kinds of panic. Then the Cessna incident happened. If
something like that occurred again, what are the chances that the next
aircraft would be fired upon?

The more often these occur without anybody seriously hurt, the less likely
there will be a shoot-down because the previous experiences will suggest
"low danger probability". ... and also the more likely that the media
will
go away because they want to be chasing real blood, not another ho-hum
ADIZ
penetration.

....borne out today, as another incursion brought out the helicopters, but
the media spent hardly any time on it.... and this group none at all, up til
now.

At least this version of the story says the F16s "dropped flares" instead of
"fired flares" like they're some kind of weapon.

The Associated Press continues to get it wrong.

This part is correct:

quote
Private planes are not allowed to fly in the Air Defense Identification
Zone, or ADIZ — an area of about 2,000 square miles radiating from the three
airports around Washington — unless they have a special transponder code and
maintain radio contact with the FAA.
/quote

This part is not:

quote
They’re not allowed at all within the Flight Restricted Zone, or FRZ, about
a 16-mile radius around the Washington Monument.
/quote

This is patently untrue. Private planes *do* fly in the Flight Restricted
Zone around Washington. Obviously, they have much tighter restrictions than
the rest of the ADIZ, but they do fly there regularly.
