Default Bell 47's ???


I have seen a few Bell 47's lately and they look cool. Does anyone
out there on this group own one? I hear that the model G or G2 is a
good one and they sell pretty reasonable.

How fast are they? How about altitude performance. Can a guy land
them at 10,000 msl with a couple people on board and light on fuel?

I'm pretty good at maintenance since I do all my own on a couple
experiementals I own. How much work are they and how about
availablity of parts?

Anybody know a website where I can look? How about cost. Does a good
one still sell for about $100k.

Anything that anyone knows about them would be appreciated. Please
post it here and don't use my email address, since I never look at
this eamail address I use here. It got so heavily spammed years ago I
never use it and I keep my real email address private.

Ive flown several G2's. As I remember speed was about 80 MPH with the
MP at he top of the green. My Bell 47G2A1 manual says the following in
regards to hover celing in ground effect:
Gross weight Lbs Temp IGE hover
2150 59 11,000'
2500 59 7,450'
2850(max gross) 59 4,140'

The highest I ever landed in this machine was at about 6,500 feet with
me in it, light on fuel on a very cold day. based on what I saw I
think the performance figures in the manual are very generous. I
wouldnt have the cajones to try to land a G2 at 10'000 msl. On the
other hand, a turbocharged G3 is a different story. Ive never flown a
G3 but know people who did. They report that landings on the 10,000 DA
range are well within the capability of the machine.

Most of my flying in the G2 was at sea level, at max gross weight. In
the summer I would pick up to a hover & the rotor RPM would drop out
of the green arc (3000-3200 RPM). I would hover at about 6" milking
the RPM up into the green so I could take off.

Parts were a concern for me so even though I wanted a Bell 47, I went
with the Hughes 300C.

Try a Google search. Ive had good results. There are several places
that sepcialize in building bell 47's. Trade-A-Plane is a good bet
too.

Its a great machine. If you are going to do mountain I'd suggest a
G-3. Obviously more to operate but more capable in the mountains.
