I didn't buy my airplane until almost 7 years after getting my certificate

Seventeen years for me (1981-1998)

Rented for 3 years. Have owned for 25.

I've flown for almost 50 years and have never owned an airplane. I no
longer have a medical so I haven't flown much lately. Only when I go up
with my friend who owns an airplane.

For me the trigger was getting my instrument ticket. With the huge increase
in utility, the constraints of renting became too painful.

Almost 2700 hours and have never owned. Probably never will.
