Because the transponder check involves 2-3 regulations in various parts of the FAR, the avionics shops have discovered a loophole that "they say" allows them to do the transponder check without including a static/encoder check. Loophole? If you fly VFR only you only need the transponder itself inspected. The standard question here is whether you need it cert'd for IFR. |

Nope. This is a strictly VFR plane. I don't even have an AI. No VOR
receivers either. mike regish "Ron Natalie" wrote in message m... "mike regish" wrote in message news:74zvb.206727$ao4.733788@attbi_s51... I just got a bill for $185 from the guy on my field. Seems kind of steep. Did that include the IFR static/altimeter test as well. The combo runs about $200 from the reputable shops around here. Much more at Capitol Avionics. |

It costs $200 here in Wisconsin, and was about the same in Indiana (Fort
Wayne). This was a transponder and pitot static check. |

Just paid 200 for a IFR. Our shop doesn't differentiate between IFR and VFR checks. The shop I use charges $60 for a VFR check, and $180 for an IFR check. There is more work to the IFR check as I understand it. |

However, even in the Aeronca (no electrical) we used to have it checked. Good to know if you're really at 1000 feet. |

BTW: I was scheduling a checkride for a student this summer and asked her to ensure her transponder check was current (she only flys VFR). We found the last one was more than 5 years ago and her checkride was the next day. She got really lucky to find a shop to do it. The reason I thought to double check was because the examiner called me up to tell me of this last minute opening because some "fool" showed up for his private checkride without a current transponder inspection. !! Probably the most overlooked inspection for the VFR pilot. Since the ELT usually gets done by the IA during annual, people assume the transponder is too. The problem is that the average IA isn't licensed to do the transponder check. -Robert, CFI |
