After reading and listening to the ATC clip posted about this
incident, especially regarding picking up the weather on the pilot's
iPhone, a question just came to mind. With the new iPhone coming out
and having built-in GPS and with TomTom coming out with their own
software to use the GPS, I'm sure that others are coming out with their
software to use on this.

My question: Assuming that someone puts together a GPS database
(similar to Garmin, etc.) for the iPhone, what would the
validity/legality of it be to having it in an aircraft? Would that
satisfy the requirement for being /G or /L equipped? Just wondering, as
that could be an inexpensive way tohave the equipment in hand/onboard.

To satisfy a "/G", you are going to have to have an approved installed
GPS. I have an KLN 89/B installed. Handhelds, iPhones, etc are not going
to qualify.

No.

Handheld devices do not meet the requirements.

Guidance on this can be found in the AC's on the faa website.
