Default FAA inspection

What is the current status of FAA airworthiness inspection availability.
Is there a long wait? Is a DAR a better alternative or hard to find?

Please comment it you have some current/recent experience.

You mean for a homebuilt? Just one (by the FAA or designee) to get
the airworthiness certificate.

There's no longer any "precover" or other intermediate progress. You are
advised however to get someone (EAA Tech Counselor) to go over your
product from time to time (especially before the structure becomes hidden).

Just one after completion for the airworthiness
cert, and it can be done by a designated
airworthiness rep (non-FAA) if your FSDO is
backlogged. You can certainly have more
done, but the FAA generally won't get
involved and doesn't need to be.

Actually,

This is the busy time of year for FSDO GA Inspectors because March is
IA renewal season. AC 20-27 has excellent guidance on getting your
homebuilt/experimental certificated. Available at www.faa.gov,
navigate to the Advisory Circular page and search under AC's by
number. EAA.org is another excellent (certainly the best?) resource.
Your local chapter will be very valuable and knowledgeable on getting
these things done in your locality.

As stated above, DAR is the easiest way, but costs money, FAA is free,
but there may be a wait, especially if you're not located near a FSDO.

Just contacted local FSDO and they said they can do it in 3 weeks.
Not bad.. and cheaper. The local DAR lives in the south till
April and is not available anyway.

Appears to vary. One of the guys in my local chapter had absolutely no
trouble at all getting FAA guys to do it.

Two things that this may attributed to. First, the Seattle FSDO has a lot
of inspectors (they handle Boeing). Second, this time of year is
apparently their quiet time.
