Default CAUTION - Active Scam Attempt on W&W Classifieds

Scams occur in every corner and attempts at Wings & Wheels classifieds are not exempt. I feel it's important to make you aware of the scam that surfaced yesterday. We received over a dozen calls regarding a person who calls himself Michael Diaz (no doubt not his real name). If you have an active classified on Wings & Wheels do not engage with this person. Below is a copy of his scam in action.

Sean Franke

The scam:

I got your mail and the contents well understood, after thorough deliberation with my client, he finally accepted your price for the glider, after considering the pictures and interest in the glider.I have just finalised payment issues on the glider with my customer and we are ready to go ahead with the transaction. i was informed by my customer that we have a check which was made out for a previous order, but the amount on it is much higher than you are supposed to be paid.

However, I have also talked to the customer and he has instructed us to carry on with his check, that means that payment will get to you in cashier check of $84,000 which is a refund payment of a cancelled order earlier made by my customer for a previous glider but yours looks better and well maintained. The condition involved in this transaction is that;

1. You are required to deduct cost of your glider $64,000. when payment gets to you and refund balance $20,000 to my customers Agent ,for him to be able to offset Prepaid shipping charges and other expenses.

2. This refund must be sent back to my customers Agent immediately you receive the Cashier's Check.

3. After payment (Cashier Check) has reached you and balance sent back to the Agent, The agent will come over for the pick up and transport to a prepaid shipper to be shipped to my customer, while title papers and other necessary documents will be handed over to my agent at the time of pick up.

Please Confirm this above conditions and provide your Full names, address and phone number for check payment to be delivered to you via courier services .

thanks

Yes, I got the email 3 days ago. I told him, via email, that I would need photocopies of his and his "clients'" driver license, passport, since there are so many scams going around. Also that the "cashier check" would go into escrow until such time as someone came to get the glider. At that time, funds would be released. Needless to say, haven't heard back.

Another type of scam is they send you an email saying that a purchase order is attached to buy your glider, but you have to click on a button to view. DON'T click on that button. I replied that I wanted their name and phone number to proceed and they replied that it was on the P.O. I repeated that I wasn't clicking on their button and the emails stopped.

Most of these scams start by agreeing to buy your glider without requesting any additional information. This is a dead giveaway that it is a scammer. They almost use the same identical language in their emails, as if they are following a scammer's toolkit.

These people don't travel. If they can't scam you from their computer desk chair they won't bother you any further.
My son's boss SCREAMS at scammers that call his office phone (daily, as we are all to familar with). He puts them on speakerphone so everyone can hear.
One of them, in his foreign accent, told him that he just has to keep doing this because "you wouldn't believe how many STUPID Americans fall for this".
Based on our current epidemiological crisis in this country (40,000 more infected daily because they don't like masks), I believe him.

I keep a referee whistle and a small air-horn by the phone. Once I get a human voice on the line which typically tells me that law enforcement is on their way to arrest me because I didn't pay my taxes, I reply with the phone receiver far away from my mouth, which causes them to turn up their volume on their end. What comes next should be self-explanatory based on the afore-mentioned equipment .... :-)
I wonder if their health care covers blown ear-drums.

Yeah M Diaz contacted me too. He said he needed more info for his clients. Told him to have his client contact me personally. It was an obvious scam. Two years or so ago he also contacted me about a Trig transponder that was advertised on another site. Scum 101.

He has also contacted me regarding our glider for sale. Suspecting it was a scam by the content of the message I played along giving him a bogus snail mail address to send the check, which was going to be certified for $15K more than our asking price. A couple of days later I let him know that we had a small snag while flying the glider. Told him the modulator valve had failed and that we could put in a replacement valve for no charge but if he wanted the updated valve that allowed him to interface with his flux capacitor more easily it would be $300. He said he was going to check with his client and then let me know. I am still waiting.
