Rent a Garmin 396?
Does anyone know of a place I can rent a Garmin 396? I am considering
a long x-country and the weather info would be useful, however I am not sure I would use it enough to justify spending the $2500 + service.... --Dan |

OK... At a rate of $150 per week for everything, including service with
all XM stations, who would be interested? --Dan |

At 75 per week, they could be paid for in a year, and they would get rented. Some weeks, like the last week of July, you could not find one for rent, I'll bet! -- Jim in NC |

Does anyone know of a place I can rent a Garmin 396? This is an interesting idea that could easily work with the inexpensive, dependable 1-2 shipping now available. The only catch I could think of is the XM service. At least for XM music services, the typically quoted service rates are for "personal" use, not for bars, retail stores, salons, etc... I've never seen an XM WX service contract, so I don't know if renting the served unit is legal. I'd rent one simply for a demo experience! |

I would think, that as long as each unit had it's own XM subscription, that wouldn't be a problem. Each unit has to have it's own subscription to work in the first place, just like a basic XM radio. Even so, on the radio side, XM forbids one from using the radio they legally own, with the subscription assigned to it in a commercial setting, such as background "Muzak" in a retail store or restaurant. This may be related to music licensing, ala ASCAP dues, etc... so it may not be a factor for Weather data or onboard music in an aircraft. Here's the music info from XM's FAQ: http://www.xmradio.com/faq/faq_list_servlet.jsp?section_id=4§ion_main=XM% 20Satellite%20Radio#154 Anyone with a 396 care to check the XM paperwork? |

$150 is too much. But at $100/week I would seriously consider it for
a one to three week cross-country. |

With the seasonality and shipping times you're probably only going to
have 2 reveue generating weeks out of every 4 on average. Plus, service will run $50/mo. At $75/wk you're looking at: $75 * 2 = $150 - $50 (service) = $100 profit per month (and we haven't even considered shipping, insurance - these things will break-, advertising, or what your time is worth for managing all of those shipments) At $2500, you will go 2 years before paying for the unit and turning a profit at which time there will probably be a newer unit out. I think we just answered the question why they are not for rent... --Dan |
