Question for everyone, and it's a long shot, but I'll try
anyway!

I just happen to have Google Earth fired up and was looking at
my hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. I scrolled up a bit north of my
parent's place, and happened to notice an airstrip slightly south of
Standing Bear Lake. It currently has X's on the runway. When I lived
there, I really didn't care about what was around there, because I
wasn't into aviation at the time. But now that I am, I am wondering
what this field is, or was.

The lat/lon of this field is 31.18'37.27N / 96.07'42.00W. I
don't see this depicted on the current Omaha sectional, and I currently
don't have any access to any older charts. This also isn't listed
anywhere on the Abandoned/Little-Known Airfields site either. Does
anyone have any idea on what this field is/was, or know how I could go
about trying to identify this field?

Just a shot in the dark: http://www.omahawks.org/

Scroll down a bit to see the runway pic. Is that what you're looking
for?

That's because it's in Texas. But assuming a typo, could you be looking at the
old South Omaha Airport?

Have a look at this: http://www.airfields-freeman.com/index.htm

The airport you are looking for may or may not be there - but this
website is fascinating reading regardless.

If it's any help, the Google Earth info in my area is a couple of years old.
If the x was temporary, it could easily be gone now. I guess it's seldom that
an x is temporary on a small airport, by hopefully so.

Your latitude is off by about 600 miles.

I have Lincoln sectional aeronautical charts from 1941, 1943, 1955, 1959,
and 1968. No airfield appears on any of those charts at that location. I
have Omaha sectional charts from 1971, 1973, 1978, 1985, and 2006. No
airfield on any of those either, the lake first appears on the 1978
sectional.

Obviously not the same place, but when I was a kid I was a member of
the local R/C model club in NY. We had a real nice flying field,
paved runway, taxiways going out to it, etc. After a few planes tried
to land there thinking it was the nearby Ramapo Valley Airport (which
was short, but not THAT short!) we painted X's on the runway.

I've seen X's painted on drag strips too since they look so much like
runways from the air.

I would say that it is an RC field since the measurement comes out to
a runway length of approximately 350' which is not quite long enough
for anything but RC planes.

Search the net for RC clubs in that area and I'm sure you'll find your
answer.

Thanks for noticing my typo, everyone! Coordinates should be:

41.18'37.27N / 96.07'42.00W. Definitely way off with 31 degrees
north!

This would be it! So it's a model airplane strip, not an
abandoned field. The strip's asphalt looks too new to be an old field
that wasn't charted. This would also explain why it wasn't listed on
the airfields-freeman site, which was the first place I looked.

Thanks once again, and great find!
