Apparently a fake, Mitch. Certainly no Sunderland was ever raised from
Windermere, or even photographed lying on the bottom. See he

Could it be a B17? The engines could have come off on crash landing.

Unlikely, since the airframe doesn't show signs of a crash.

That was deliberate. The story goes that some Sunderlands were
deliberately sunk in Windermere to dispose of them at the end of the war
as surplus- but only after the engines had been removed from them. Its
believed that the image was faked using an Airfix model ( Airfix is a
plastic kit manufacturer in the UK, similar to Tamiya etc ). To make it
more authentic and to conform with the myth, the engines were left off
the model.
