I need the wisdom of someone with experience flying to Sedona. We were
planning on going there tomorrow, but they're predicting thunderstorms
for the next three days so we're considering calling the whole thing
off. Am I being paranoid? I'm IFR rated, 700 hours, in an SR22 with a
stormscope but no XM. I have quite a lot of experience flying in the
desert and mountains, but mostly on CAVU days.

Advice from more experienced hands would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This is a somewhat unusual weather pattern over Arizona this week. Lots of
moisture and cloud cover for this time of year. I had a flight yesterday
morning (although not to Sedona) and the ceilings were between 8K and 10K,
and not much convective activity early in the day. Are you coming from the
west? If so, you probably could do it VFR, with good visibility under the
overcast, with scattered showers/virga. I'm not sure about IFR, but
probably not an issue if you can plan for a morning flight. IFR in AZ is
often not practical due to the high MEA's

Fly early in the day before the solar heating and approach from the west
over the low country. Should be high ceilings before the sun heats
everything up.. then the CUs pop and grow and then comes the rain.
