Default Ideas for long flight to midwest

Continue on up the Mighty Mississippi into Minnesota. If it's hot, Duluth,
MN is a perfect destination - "America's Air Conditioned City". Then fly
on
to Bayfield, Wisconsin. A Door County and/or Mackinac Island hop would
make for a memorable trip! Then head for NC. :-)

Yep, stop in Iowa City, spend the night -- and then head due north to
Anoka-Blaine for lunch with Montblack the next day. After lunch, continue
north up to Duluth/Superior, on the shores of Lake Superior. There's a cool
seaplane base there, and a great museum dedicated to Richard I. Bong, the
top-scoring US ace of WWII.

Then continue east, along the southern shore of Lake Superior, to Ashland,
WI. (Keep the blue on your left, and you can't miss it!) Spend the night
in the Hotel Chequamegon (or however you spell it) -- a great hotel in old
Ashland. It's a very neat area, with a great FBO.

From there, head East-Southeast to Door County, WI, and land at Ephraim, WI.
Catch a ride from the FBO to the White Gull Inn, located in Fish Creek, for
one of the best meals you'll EVER have. The flight in and out to the
peninsula is stunning, too.

After lunch, head south, around the southern tip of Lake Michigan, through
the awesome VFR lakeshore corridor through Chicago. Throw a wreath (or, at
least, mutter a Daley curse) as you over-fly the remnants of the once-great
Meigs Field, and enjoy the awesome views of the sky-scrapers in downtown.
Continue on to Dayton, and visit the Air Force Museum. Don't forget to
visit the Wright Brothers stuff there -- the old bike shop, and the field
where most of their early test flights took place.

This is a great trip, and one I've flown several times.

If you REALLY want a treat and have the time, go from Door County NORTHEAST
to Mackinac Island, and spend the night there, before heading southeast to
Dayton. The island is an incredible experience -- no motor vehicles have
been allowed on it since 1903, with the exception of aircraft -- and you'll
never regret having overflown the incredible Mackinac Bridge -- longer and
taller than the Golden Gate!

IIRC,

Unless they moved it BACK to Dayton, the original Wright Bros bike shop
is actually in Dearborn, MI at Greenfield Village.

Part of the Henry Ford Museum...

Give me a heads up - if I'm available, you bet, stop in. There are two very
good museums on the field that are hit-and-miss for being available for
viewing. Also, Surfside Seaplane Base (8Y4) is only 5 miles east of ANE.

It is privately owned & operated, has an 1900 foot grass runway with a full

Superior.

Pretty much what I said from here on.... :-)

Jay - we will try to make IA city if we're close. Will write a trip report
in any event when we return. Thanks to all for the suggestions!

We leave tomorrow am early. Weather looks a bit tricky - bad tstms over the
northern route, and some tstms/wind over the southern route. Our 140 can't
go the middle route! We may have to fly via El Paso (farther south than we
want to) if the weather is bad. Our preferred route is Camarillo-Winslow-
Tucumcari-Amarillo, then wherever we want to go from there.

I know. But Dayton has re-built the bike shop, supposedly to spec, in its
original location.

I've always wondered which idiot local politician mortgaged Dayton's future
to Henry Ford, way back when?

The airport in Dayton that has the blimp hangar (hangar made out of

It's the airport towards the north.

Okay... I live in Ohio. The only blimp hangars in the state that I know
of are at Akron Municipal and Wingfoot Lake. Where is the one north of
Dayton?

I thought Sporty's was neat for a short visit in Ohio. If you make it
that far east might as well drop by Downtown Island KDKX in Knoxville,
Tn or the warbird museum in Gatlinburg Tn.

We have a Cherokee 140 and have flown to OSH twice.

So this year we decided we would try instead to fly from California to
North Carolina (FFA)!

But scheduling problems cut two days out of our schedule, making the east
coast a bit too much of a stretch.

So we're planning on leaving Friday from CMA, going east to Amarillo on the
first day. After that... some combination of where the weather is better
and what is interesting. We're thinking we'll go east of the Mississippi,
perhaps Ohio, Kentucky, etc.

So my question for you midwesterners is: where is interesting to visit? Any
great airports? Any good museums? Anything noteworthy? We're pretty
flexible on where we can go, so give us some suggestions and I'll post a
trip report in a week and a half or so!

Ah. It's been several years since I've been to Dayton (and many more
since I used to actully live and work in Kettering, OH outside Dayton.)

I've always wondered which idiot local politician mortgaged Dayton's future

"Back in the day" you didn't say "no" to the likes of Ford, Gugenheim,
Carnagie, etc...Money "talked" then too...

I'll second the USAF Museum as a destination.

It's awesome..

Jay B

I wish they would allow public landings there, even if it were just certain
days of the year. That would make it a complete aviation experience.

As it is, you'll have to land at DAY and get a car.

They had a GA fly-in at Wright-Pat for a few years, but I'm sure 911 has
eliminated that by now. It was by invitation only. I was there some time in the
early 90s and have FFO in my logbook. They had probably 20-30 invitations out
the day I was there. A friend of mine was base Ops Officer and wangled me an
invitation.

Going to ANE next Wednesday night or Thursday morning, any hangars
available for a week that would be cheaper than Cirrus?
