I wonder about Nextel's wireless broadband. "Stay connected at blazing speeds at
home, in the car, or anywhere you go in the Nextel network."

a cell phone in the air?

Mine's been down for a month. I emailed them and got only an note
that they were having "server problems" - no indication of how long.
A real nuisance this time of year.

TAFs and METARs were down too a while back but seem to be OK now.

Free software is a bit of a problem when there is a problem - but the price
is right.

I've experienced the great benefits of having CBAV on board many times.
This past weekend I experienced significantly reduced capability without it.

Coming back from Ocracoke, it slowly became apparent that RDU was being hit
by thunderbumpers. The airport appeared to close for awhile and according
to the controller "we'll be back in a few minutes with a plan".

The airport started taking approaches again but tstorms were still obscuring
the area. I tried high, I tried low but everytime I tried to go to home at
8nc8 or RDU, I found my way "blocked" either by IMC or VMC with lightening
and rain.

I continued to drive the controller crazy with a series of requests but I
refused to ask for a clearance because I had no intent of going into IMC.

I am convinced I could have circumnavigated the area and landed home or at
RDU with CBAV. If I could have seen what was on the other side and some
sense of how it was growing or moving, a plan could have been developed.
Without it, I had to land at 5W5. And with no Nexrad available there, it
was time to punt. The FBO was closed but the airport owner was kind enough
to drive us home to return the next day. Thanks Paul!!

Long Live CBAV!!!

My question was not one of ARE there legal issues . .it's not allowable
by FCC rules .. but rather are users just ignoring them and using the
cell phone for weather anyway.

I don't use it in the air because it doesn't seem to work. I've only tried
it once, fairly low altitude maybe 3000 agl. It was over an area I know has
reception on the ground. I had a Sprint phone before that, same problem
with reception. But our club now has a few new Cessna's with uplink Nexrad!

Do you use it in the air? If so, how is reception?

I have very little luck making call on my Sprint PCS phone in the air.

I fly airplanes off and on as a hobby, I use http://www.weathertap.com/

for
Nexrad images and other. I use a cell phone plugged into my WindowsCE
pocket PC with a cheap cable (Verizon). I know it's not the palm

format,
but just thought others might be interested. It's about 75 bucks a

year,
but it's color and there is a special palm site so all the maps are

scaled
down for quick loading. Verizon has a free number you call to get the
internet connection. It's pretty slow, but you don't need a modem in

your
pocketPC and the Verizon service is free.

The last 2 times (yesterday and 1 week ago) I've tried to used CBAV to get
Nexrad images, I get a blank screeen with the word "display" on it.

Anyone have this problem recently? Is there a problem?

Yes, exactly what I got (Palm VIIx, St. Louis, WI, and points in
between, in air and on ground)

What's up?

Um, no offense, 'Maule', but if I saw something in the thread
which already explained the problem/solution, I wouldn't have
posted, so the instruction to "read above" isn't too informative
to me.

I read on google.groups these days. Some people set their
headers so their posts aren't archived. Other posts simply don't
show up due to uneven newsfeed propegation.

So if you don't mind, what's the 'skinny'?

Jav Henderson posted that the system is down and the problem is being worked. Do
not adjust your set. DGB
