Default Luftwaffe Aircraft with Flamethrowers

To Jerry who e-mailed with the question, "what Luftwaffe aircraft
carried a flammenwerfer?"

Answer: Both the He-111 and Ju-88. The book "Luftwaffe in Focus #2 has
a photo of a crashed He-111 with the flamethrower and this site below
has two photos at the bottom:

http://www.luftarchiv.info/bordgerate/waffen2.htm

Three Fw-190F8 test aircraft were also fitted with belly flamethrowers
in early 1945 but no photos have yet emerged.

This is a google language translation.

Already at the end of of 1939 second Lieutenant Stahl, technical
officer with the kg of 51, made the suggestion, to repel attacking
hunters through in the tail of the bombers and long-range
reconnaissance aircraft inserted flame throwers. The attacking hunter
should in-push into the discharged soot oil cloud, so that its windows
of a vehicle became suddenly blind. In February 1940 appropriate
attempts with He 111 and Ju 88 in the test site camouflaging joke took
place. The equipment was inserted then also for a test with beginning
of the Russia campaign with the kg 51, does not seem not to have
become generally accepted however at the troop.

As weapon of attack the flame throwers "Gero 11" A, federation C were
used with the L.G. 190 for low attacks.

When the He 111 tried out its flamethrower over London, the RAF lads
didn't realize that they were being attacked.

Instead, a bunch of them claimed the He 111 as shot down, or at least
last seen with flame come out the rear of the aircraft.

all the best -- Dan Ford
