Interesting that when I first looked at it, having read your post, I
missed the shadow. There may be a shadwo, but if so it goes the other way
to the other shadows. Or the 'flag' shadow may be from a different object,
out of camera shot.

What is the explanation for the 'missing' shadow, then?

Is it the famous flag photo? If so, have a look at the ground where the
shadow "should be" - there's a shallow crater right there. In the un-cut
image, the photo shows a larger scene and the shadow can be seen on the
right-hand side of the image.

I think in the liftoff shot you see another perspective and from that
angle there certainly is a visible shadow.
