This approach is marked radar required, and there is no charted feeder
route to the IAF. So one approaches via a random route under radar.

IFR through Detroit Class B by
Andrew Sarangan
I am planning a trip to PTK (Oakland County) which is about 25 miles north
of Detroit. I will be coming from the south. The route is V493 to CRL and
then direct to the PSI VOR. Planned altitude is 6000'. This will take me
almost directly overhead the DTW airport. What are the chances of...

How to file XXX to XXX? by
Nicholas Kliewer
If I just want to do IFR approaches at my class D airport of origin,
how should I file? One FSS person suggested that I file McKinney (TKI)
direct to a 5 mile on a 360 radial from the airport (which has no VOR)
and then back to TKI -- putting "multiple approaches" in the comments
section. Any...

Passed IRF Retest by
Jon Kraus
A few weeks ago I posted about busting my IFR checkride. Well yesterday
I finally got it finished up. Here is a recap of what transpired in both
checkrides. First I'll reiterate that not only was I this DE's first
IFR student, we also had the FAA examiner with us giving him a "checkride".
The...

Best foggles or hood w/ Headset and Glasses by
Jeff Saylor
If you are a pilot who uses both a headset and eyeglasses, what IFR
trainng device works and fits best for you? The generic foggles, like
Sporty's sells? The Jeppesen JeppShades Flip-Up hood? A particular
model of hood?

"Going for the Visual" by
O. Sami Saydjari
A while back, I was with an experienced pilot, IMC, descending to land
at my home airport. The airport is not in an environment where ATC will
give vectors to final. As we approached, ATC asked which approach we
wanted. He said that he was "going for the visual." The ceilings were
right at the...

STAR to nearby airport by
Viperdoc
Recently while returning from a trip I was heading to my home base, which is
a class D airport. I was handed off to the local tracon, which has a class C
airport, and was issued a clearance to follow a star that led to a navaid
near my destination. However, the star was for the class C airport, not...

Instrument Checkride on May 17th by
David B. Cole
On Saturday my instructor and I flew to Stewart International in
Newburg, NY for a few approaches. The plan was to fly out and do the
VOR -27 partial panel a couple of times, followed by an ILS. After
that we planned to fly to 4N1, Greenwood Lake, before returning to
CDW. Partial panel holding had...

landings (off topic) by
Lee Elson
Sorry for the off topic question, but I suspect there are quite a few
of you that could help me:
I'm looking for good techniques for teaching student pilots how to
handle the final phase of landing. In particular how to get students
to recognize when the airplane (a Cessna 152 or 172) is sinking...

ADF Problem by
tony roberts
Hi
Today I was flying north and my ADF was tuned to an NDB.
The needle pointed at 330 degrees (or 11 O'clock) until I reached the
NDB, and then it swung until it pointed behind.
I dialed up the next NDB and it pointed at 330 again until passage.
And I dialed up another NDB - same indication - all...

What's the point of this? by
Paul Tomblin
I was looking at Phoenix AZ on the low altitude en-route chart, and there
is a cluster of GPS waypoints charted all around the VOR (in the Class B).
I assume those are for GPS instrument approaches. Is there a reason why
those are charted on the en-route?

What fixes do you use for flight planning? by
Paul Tomblin
I'm trying to improve my database generators for CoPilot and other
programs (see http://navaid.com/ and http://xcski.com/~ptomblin/CoPilot/
for details). The problem I'm trying to deal with is that the FAA is
totally inconsistent on how they name waypoints, DAFIF isn't any better,
and there are...

filing IFR plan for VFR flight conditions by

I seem to have read or been told once that,
one can file an IFR flightplan with remark for
VFR flight conditions when not instrument rated,
or current, to get routing and practice within the system.

Mountain Flying Course? by
Nicholas Kliewer
I live in Dallas, TX and don't get out of the flat lands much.
This Fall, I am planning a trip to Oregon in a C172 and figure
that I could use some mountain flying training.
Can anyone recommend a good Mountain Flying Course? Preferably
near Colorado Springs (I have family there).
Any other tips...

Right seat flying by
Matt Whiting
This isn't an IFR related question, but I don't see an r.a group devoted
to instruction. I just received the May/June issue of Aviator's Guide
and they make an interesting claim on page 38. In the third paragraph
they say that it is illegal for a non-instructor pilot to fly in the
right seat with...

Altimeter inaccurate by
smf
My Altimeter is accurate when on the ground or at lower alt. When I climb up
to 7k and above and check it against GPS and approach controls read out it
is about 300+ feet off.
Is it the altimeter I'm having problems with?
