When my mechanic had my JPI installation half finished, I noticed in the
installation manual that JPI specified the star washer be _between_ the ring
terminal from the probe and the wire to the display. I thought that was
interesting and unusual. He had been putting them under the nut. After I
pointed that out, he made the remaining connections with the star washer
between the terminals. I've noticed no difference in operation so far.

I'm betting on Ron's #1 choice: a bad connection. First place to look
is the splice between the wire coming from the GEM and the lead coming
from the probe. These are often screw/star washer/ring terminal/nut
affairs that can become loose. They're usually in the engine compartment
covered by sleeves.
