Hello all,
I was just wondering which route most pilots took from the bay area to
Las Vegas. I had looked at the sectional and wondered if the Mammoth
pass (Friant VOR 023 radial to Mammoth) had been attempted, and how
safe it was... Just looking for a route any suggestions would be
great! I would be flying a Pa28-180, No O2... Thank you in advance

Troy -

I did this over the July 4th weekend. Since I did NOT have O2, I
decided not to take the Mammoth Pass route. I planned two routes, 1 south
skirting the southern edge of the Edwards restricted airspace and a nothern
route crossing Lake Tahoe and then basically south paralleling highway 95.

Going, I took the southern route, stopping at PTV for a break and to
top the tanks. I then went via VIS PMD DAG HEC and then direct into the
LAS airspace where LAS approach gave me vectors to the Red Rock Golf course
for a right base entry into VGT. If the Edwards restricted airspace is not
in use, Joshua approach will clear you through it. I was at 9,500 or less
all the way.

Returning, I decided to do some sightseeing and went north remaining
west of highway 95 but cut west of Goldfield and Tonopah. I landed at
Yerington for a break and some real cheap 100LL ($2.40/gal on July 8th). I
then basically headed west over Minden, crossing Lake Tahoe and then south
into the Bay area. Stayed at 10,500 or lower all the way.
