I had my closest simulation of flight in a quickie q1 yesterday.

out doing a bienniel flight review in what I thought was a schmick
cessna 150 aerobat.
at 3,000ft we were climbing for altitude for a practise spin and we
sat there cruising along with full rpm at best climb speed and
attitude for 20 minutes without the altimeter moving a gnats whisker.
the mind strays in such situations and I couldnt help thinking that I
was at a safe altitude experiencing the same sort of agony that some
Q1 builders have related to me about takeoffs with the smaller onan
engine.
talk about managing limited resources and praying for thermals!

is there a better engine for the Q1 than the onans?

Actually I found the Q1 to be a pretty lively performer on such
limited power. A friend of mine put a Kawasaki in his, but I liked it
better with the Onan.
The only problem was that Onans loved to die.

Ed Sullivan test pilot of hundreds of aircraft, well 4 or 5 anyway!
If zoom can say it why can't I.
