Obviously not the same place, but when I was a kid I was a member of
the local R/C model club in NY. We had a real nice flying field,
paved runway, taxiways going out to it, etc. After a few planes tried
to land there thinking it was the nearby Ramapo Valley Airport (which
was short, but not THAT short!) we painted X's on the runway.

I've seen X's painted on drag strips too since they look so much like
runways from the air.
