Blue Angel Lead Solo had to make arrested landing today
Funny you should ask. They still fly numbers 1 through 4 for the diamond, 5
(Lead Solo) and 6 (Opposing Solo).
This morning it was hazy and we didn't expect to get good photos. The
diamond taxied out. Everyone was happy. A solo taxied out. Everyone was
sad. There was no number 5. That meant no crossover maneuvers and no sneak
pass. The diamond went to the runway and waited. Number 6 sent to his
place at the west end of the field. Then nothing happened. A few minutes
went by. Then, over the sound of the jet engines, we heard....loud and
clear.....the William Tell Overture. Yup, Number 5 was in a spare plane and
on his way to the runway!! Their numbers are stick-ons and I'm sure they
could have given him a nice big Number 5 but there wasn't a need to do it.
We knew who was coming.
Last week we had two number two aircraft flying in the same practice
session. One was in the number two slot and one was the lead solo. Right
now there is a number 7 flying around the neighborhood. We figure they are
taking VIPs for rides or maybe getting in some instruction for the new
members of the team.
