Eh, the CFI certificate is good for only two years anyway, so pretty much all
the active CFIs have plastic certificates anyway. And I had to replace the
pilot certificate when I got my pocket picked in the Philippines.

When you renew your CFI certificate if you don't already have a new
pilot's certificate one is automatically sent. The new certificates
don't include SSN so it wouldn't make much sense to send a new CFI
ticket with a new number but still says "valid only with pilot
certificate XXX-XX-XXX"

Hell, I figure that the reason that they really switched was that it was
getting difficult to find crappy quality 9-pin dot matrix printers with
which to print the old paper licenses... Used to be that if it looked too
good, it had to be a fake...

And with the new remotely readable e-Passports, I can see a market for
lead lined passport holders... Seems that the government can't leave
things alone... Can't resist the opportunity to change something that's
not broke... ****in' politicians and bureaucrats...

Aluminum would work better. The holders have to be conductive, not
opaque to X rays.

I just received my plastic certificate in today's mail. I passed my
PP-ASEL checkride on Nov 5, so this is the first certificate for me.
Opening the envelope to find it brought a huge smile to my face.

Have they been issuing the plastic certificates for long? I was
expecting paper, until I saw the AVWeb article yesterday. The letter
that came with my certificate said the FAA had been issuing paper
certificates since 1926,

It's got a magnetic strip on the back...I wonder what's encoded
there...

Get one now, just report your current certificate missing
and ask that all certificates you now hold have the SSN
removed. They will replace them all, with a single common
FAA number.

Nah. I'll just go for my commercial rating.

Actually I started that, stopped when the arrow I was using developed a
problem with the prop governer (it is the shortest flight in my logbook)
and I got sidetracked onto other things. Maybe I'll go back and finish
it up.
