Were these STC's installations, or did you need to get a field approval?
I've been waiting six months for the STC to get signed by the FAA regional office in Chicago. Since the wing lights are the same for a lot of already approved Beech products, it is amazing how long it is taking them to sign the paperwork (for a Baron). If the field approval wasn't too bad, I may decide to go that route rather than wait for the STC. |

If the field approval wasn't too bad, I may decide to go that route rather than wait for the STC. I installed the RMD HID kits (same as those sold by Knots2U I believe) under a field approval on my Skylane a couple of years ago. It was not difficult at all to secure said approval, using the existing STC as the basis for the approval. The STC is for installing these kids on their wingtips, I wanted to install them on the bose bowl to replace the 4509's that burnt out so easily. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. They use 1/3 of the power of a 4509 and they put out a very bright, very white light. I installed the kits myself, with inspection, approval and 337 submission by an owner friendly A&P/IA. -jav |

I've been waiting for the Baron STC to come out for the K2U installation, rather than going through a field approval. Apparently, the application for the STC has been sitting on a desk at the Chicago Region for around 6 months. The lights are brighter, use a lot less current, and don't burn out. They can be left on continuously for recognition. I can hardly wait. Doc, am I correct in assuming that these lights would be installed in your cowling and nosewheel when the STC is available? I recall that you have the TKS delivery system installed on your leading edges, as does my Bonanza, so a leading edge installation is not an option. -- Peter |

I have a friend with a Bonanza. He has via an stc, a landing light
mounted on each strut of the main gear. However none are hid. I only mention this to make you aware of possibilities. The Baron I fly does not have a nose light (radar), but does have wing
lenses. The HID is a simple bolt in and wire job. On the other hand, the nose gear taxi light may be more problematic, since the ballast can not interfere with the retraction mechanism (obviously). Locating this in the nose well could be more of a challenge. |

Interesting idea. I was not aware of this option. Do you suppose there is some type of in-line switch that prevents the lights from illuminating if the landing gear is up? I have wondered the same about my default taxi light on the nose gear when I discovered I inadvertently left the taxi light on after the gear came up. -- Peter |

Locating this in the nose well could be more of a challenge. Maybe not. For the Seneca's, there must be six feet of HV wire. The ballasts are mounted up in the nose compartment on the forward side of the instrument bulkhead. This is the lopresti install. |

But if the light is enclosed, then I would guess yes. If your interested, I will ask about them when I see him next. And perhaps who's stc it is. HID is the way to go. |
