So, I've been busy, I still want to fly, but I'm (delibrately) time-limited since I absolutely enjoy every minute with my 'girls'. I seriously considered (and still am considering) my Comm-Glider and perhaps CFI-G. I had planned to get 1500 hours and the get my 737 type rating (and ATP), but 1500 isn't going to come anytime soon with my (new) responsibilities, and the 737 type rating is only simulator time. Also, jumping from 172, Archer, Duchess type of flying to a 737, seems a tad ambitious. For the same price, the Citation rating would give me jet time, a type-rating, a challenge, and all in a few intense days. Since most of the work seems to be homework before the training, the course seems to fit my requirements, and I'll by flying a jet! Anyway, I'd like to know what your thoughts are - whether you think it's a great idea or if you think I've been smoking something. BTW: The King DVD shows a preflight and a flight (John and Martha), I like it and it is a great example of how much faster things happen. Hi,
I forgot to mention that I initially got the whole 737 idea from Wayne's ATOP course (http://www.b737.com). Highly recommended - he's a great teacher - sign up now! A friend and I did it while it was still in Denver at United. The course recently moved to Continental in Houston. If you look very careful at Wayne's ATOP site, you will see me shaking Tim M's hand - Tim and I met on these NGs and then bumped into each other at United (in fact, he recognized me first) and we became Captain/FO buddies. No. A friend of mine (Captain for SkyWest) tries to convince me to move in that direction, but it's not going to happen anytime soon. For me, any jet type ratings would just be 'the next challenge', I love learning about flying and improving my flying skills, so it just seems like a great 'experience' even though in reality, I'll never use the type rating other than to impress my wife. Lots of CFIs there trying to climb the ladder and plenty of others telling them their nuts You were/are of tremendous help - I've already got some excellent suggestions. Thanks! Since (at least I learned) a lot of the TR is about the FMS, may be you benefit from downloading a simulator for the Honeywell GNS-XLS from http://www.bendixking.com/static/simulators/ (including workbook and manual). I see a just for fun type rating... I don't know if it would interest you,
but one thing I've looked into a couple times is a DC3 type rating. There are several outfits around the country including one "club", I think it's in CA, where you become a member, get your type rating and then are "approved" to put your name on their list of pilots to move the airplane around the country for training and for airshow appearances. Plus it seems like everybody knows a "local" DC3 which may give you the opportunity to use the rating. Another fun rating that you might be interested in, and a lot cheaper, would be a multi-engine sea rating. There are a couple places in FL that do them, usually in a Twin SeaBee, or you may be able to find a Twin Otter. Me, I can't even swim, so it doesn't really appeal to me, but those who I know have done it have had a blast. Let me know if you find something... I may just have to start a new adventure myself. And the cool thing is, is that I can't use the excuse for not doing it as "I'll never use it" because the same goes for the Citation or 737 type ratings as well as the seaplane rating - http://www.norcalaviation.com - the most fun I've legally had in a plane!!! I have family over in FL (see post about Key West flight), so hopefully I get around to doing that someday. Last time I checked, the owner of the twin that Norcal Aviation has/had wouldn't put money into required engine maintenance, so they didn't have a CMES. Let me know if you find something... Update: I bought the Sportys Citation DVD a couple of months ago, also bought their glider DVD, and yesterday my Nolly Citation DVD arrived in the mail. Oh, I also bought a Citation manual on eBay. Off topic: Speaking of gliders, a friend recently got his Private (Glider) add-on and was up in Minden today and he said he got to 17,999 and 11.9" and really had to push the nose down - 3.5 hours on a $35 tow - and he called me at work to tell me.
