Default General McPeak on Bush's War

"Says retired Air Force Gen. Merrill McPeak, a member of the group who is
advising John Kerry but was Oregon chairman for the Dole campaign in 1996 and a
Veteran for Bush in 2000: “I don’t think that this accusation of politics
on my part will wash. It’s just this administration has gone away from me,
not vice versa.”

The Iraq debacle is “the worst reverse we’ve had on the international
scene, and it simply has to be laid at the feet of the president,” says
McPeak, who served as Air Force chief of staff under the first President Bush
and commander in chief of Pacific air forces under President Reagan.

Americans are starting to understand this line of critique. A CNN–USA
Today–Gallup poll released Thursday found that, for the first time since the
start of the war, most Americans believe it was a mistake to send U.S. troops
to Iraq. Most Americans also feel that the war has not made the United States
safer from terrorism, according to the poll."

And from those who served and suffered under and with General McPeak for

oh
too many years-

WHO GIVES A CRAP WHAT THAT A&^%$#E THINKS!"

Anything McPeak is FOR- you would do well to be AGAINST.

And no, I'm not just talking about "Death of 1,000 Uniform Alterations"

here
either. McPeak was flamingly wrong on many more substantive issues as

well.

God...remember the 'bus driver' look?

Pete

My memory is that we already had the bus driver look when McPeak showed up.
I thought he wanted to change us to the airline pilot look?...

You're right..... I was in a AFRes Troop Carrier outfit at Mitchel AFB NY and
had a TDY flight to Baer Fld, Ind. back in '50. I was in the bus terminal at
Ft. Wayne wearing our brand new blues for some reason I can't remember and was
actually approached by a little old lady who wanted to know when the next bus
for Indianapolis left. Scout's honor, this is a true story! It really
happened.

Of course, that was a bit before McPeak's time. Wasn't his uniform thingee
adding shoulder boards to the blues? Whatever it was, I was unimpressed with
his contributions and attributed it to the stress of too many "G"s he underwent
during his career as a fighter pilot. (^-^)))

McPeak removed the epaulets, the US insignia, all visible pockets, and
the nametag from the service dress, while changing the fabric texture
and color. He also changed over to a naval style sleeve rank.

Personally, I managed not to even get the new service dress until two
years ago, and have still managed not to have to actually wear the
thing.

I did time at the Pentagon during his tenure. I heard nothing good about

him.
(Anyone remember the fameous "White Paper" and the infameous "Brown Paper"
which followed?)

Anyway, one of my coworkers was in a meeting at which both the Secretary

of the
Air Force and McPeak were present. She reported that at one point the

Secretary
became thoroughly frustrated with McPeak's shennagans and told him

"Merrill,
YOU worry about the uniforms and let me run the Air Force." I wish I'd

been
there!

Ed
"If an enemy power is bent on conquering you, and proposed to
turn all of his resources to that end, he is at war with you;
and you -- unless you contemplate surrender -- are at war with
him." --Barry Goldwater

McPeak tried to upgrade the USAF from a busdriver's uniform to a airline
pilot's uniform.
