Teens in Aviation by
Michael 182
Great story about two teens planning on flying across the country. One
happens to be my daughter's classmate - nice kids.

Tuskegee Airmen on History Channel by
Ted Huffmire
Is one of my favorite movies, up there with
Memphis Belle. They had an interview with two
of the Tuskegee Airmen who answered questions
about how realistic the movie was. One of them
shot down a Nazi jet fighter. Even though they
won many medals, the two veterans said that
they experienced terrible...

Denver Terminal Area Chart Question - BVR vor/dme by
Robert Easton
Does anybody know why on the Denver Terminal Area Chart, the Byers (BVR
113.5) vor/dme facility is charted without the compass ring that are on most
vortacs? It's the only one I've seen charted like this. Byers is located
33NM on the 090 radial of DVV (the Denver International Vortac).
Thanks,...

Logging time as safety pilot? by
CFLav8r
I recently helped a friend fly to St. Augustine from Orlando.
My question is: Can or should you log the time as safety pilot?
Although I did not actually fly the aircraft, I did handle the radios and
visual guide while my friend flew under the hood.

FBO on Turk (Turkoise) by
Paul Folbrecht
Gonna be in Turkoise in the Carribbean in early March and definitely
want to do some recreational flying. I'd really like to hear from
anybody who has experience with FBO's for rental in the area. Thanks.

Flying is Life - The Rest is Just Details by
Michael
Every so often, we have people post here and complain. Flying isn't
useful. It's too expensive. It's inconvenient. The customer service
at FBO's is terrible, and the planes are always broken. It's taking
forever to solo and the CFI (is always late/is just looking to move
up/has no clue/is...

Anywhere WX users - free tool for easier e-mail, waypoint entry, etc... by
Mark Astley
Please excuse this shameless plug...
For Anywhere WX users (well actually, anyone using a PocketPC while
airborne), I've created a custom Soft Input Panel (SIP) which lets you enter
commonly used text fragments with a single tap. There are also some more
advanced features in the works, like the...

I just received the latest issue of SPORT AVIATION.
New Piper has finally announced their version of the flat panel.
Better late than never.
BTW... it's only for the six seat aircraft (at this time).

Vandalism, security measure, or something else? by
Peter Duniho
I was in Tucson over the holidays. At the AFB there (Davis-Monthan), they
keep a lot of aircraft in storage. At the south end of the base, several
recent arrivals were parked near the fence. For some reason, the "U.S. Air
Force" markings on the side had been torn up.
Does anyone have any idea...

Fire extinguisher problem by
Paul Folbrecht
My problem is that I want one for my flight bag but don't want to pay
$105 for the one Sporty's sells. Are there alternatives? Other than
leaving open the chance of dying a horrible, fiery death?
(Sorry, it just doesn't seem that they ought to cost that much..)

The instructor is my old CFII, which is why I know about this; I'm posting

avian pilotage by
Gary Drescher
According to Reuters today, British scientists tracking homing pigeons with
GPS transmitters discovered that the pigeons don't return home by celestial
navigation. Instead, they follow roads. Closely. Prof. Tim Guilford: "It
is striking to see the pigeons fly straight down the A34 Oxford bypass,...

Cold weather ops by
Happy Dog
Many GA a/c are restricted to operations above a certain temperature. In my
case (Zlin 242L) the restriction is -20C at sea level and goes down to -40 C
(or F) at 9000 feet. But, the POH doesn't say why. Anybody know?

Commercial dual crosscountry definition by

With apologies for my somewhat silly previous question picking on the
wording of the Commercial aeronautical experience requirements, this one
really is a call for others' experience / opinion.
Saturday afternoon I met my new instructor; Plan A was to do the day and
night VFR duals back to back,...
