30 Years Since Edmund Fitgerald by Jay Honeck
It was November of '75 when the SS Edmund Fitzgerald went down without a word, taking 29 sailors to the bottom of Lake Superior. To those of us who grew up on the Great Lakes, it was a terrible thing (even for those of us who had nothing to do with the maritime industry), and the sinking...

San Diego during Thanksgiving by Chris
Gang, I would plan to fly into the San Diego area over Thanksgiving. First of all, is this a good idea for this time of year or should I mentally prepare myself to "fight" against tons of heavy iron with my little 182? Plan of the visit would be SeaWorld and the Zoo. What would be a good airport...

New York destination recommendations anyone? by City Dweller
The weather is promised to be great, albeit a little chilly, this week end in New York. Anyone has a any recommendations where to fly from the New York City area? I was thinking maybe Block Island or even further Northeast to Martha's Vineyard? If anyone has some suggestions I am all ears. --...

GPS Approach Equipment Suffix by Marco Leon
I posted this over at the IFR group but I had only one reply so I figured I'd try here. Question: Are folks with IFR Approach-certified GPS boxes supposed to file /G or /R? Before you answer consider that the AIM (and every other publication I could find) define /G suffixes for Enroute and...

Update on new paint job and leather seats - Trip back home by Longworth
We flew our Cardinal from the AOGPaint in Mena, Arkansas back to New York last weekend. Both the paint job and seat reupholstering work were done on time, a month from delivery date. We were quite pleased to see the paint scheme looked exactly like the photoshopped image which we emailed to...

Bremerton, WA by Mike Rapoport
We will be flying (hopefully) to Bremerton, WA (KPWT) on Wednesday and the weather in the PNW does not look very good either now or in the forecast (widespread fog, vis 1/8sm). Are there any local fog effects at Bremerton? Are there airports in the area that are not as likely to have fog? ...

Textbook Belly landing at PDK by Dave
And as usual, the media- esse tried to hype it, but the reporter from the copter really did a good job explaining. The pilot skimmed it in just perfect. No problem. Oh, this was live TV... ~D

Transponder problem... by Dave
Had a strange one today.. While squawking IDENT , our "ident" stuck "on" ATC confirmed we were continuously "identing" Cycling the transponder to off then on again cleared the ident fault. Pressing the button again locks the ident light on again

and, since I am posting.... by Dave
I'd like to thank the group as a whole for an education in RE to the skills, aerodynamics, etc and etc of flying. I'd like to thank Jay for his constant posts, and website, and obvious love of flight. I'd like to thank Peter Duniho, an obvious butt sometimes, but nevertheless, a true pilot. Mr....

IFR ADIZ Flying ? by John Doe
I've read alot of the issues with flying through/in the Washington DC ADIZ. Are most of these issues due to folks trying to fly VFR through this airspace or are just as many people having these issues under an IFR flight plan? I was planning on flying up to BWI in a couple of weeks, it will be my...

Commercial rating: Am I wrong here? by gatt
Hey, all. Looking for opinions here, and here's the situation: ME: 240 hrs, PP-ASEL-IA, commercial student. I took out an aviation loan to get my Instrument, Commercial and CFI back when I had nothing to lose, having been laid off from my job and looking to change careers. Got my IA, then got...

Way OT... help a fellow pilot answer a quiz by john smith

Article about LSA in mainstream press by Jimbob
This is type of press LSA needed. Something not in an aviation mag that potential plots could see. http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/aviation/1959137.html It will be interesting to see if other mainstream press outlets pick up on it.

Why do pilots need a medical by Andrew Sarangan
The recent questions about medical certificate, paper trail, sport pilot etc.. etc..got me thinking. What is the reasoning behind requiring a medical for pilots? Why is a minor medical condition disqualifying for flying a Cessna 172, when the same person can drive a 20,000 lb truck on public roads?...

Apollo 800 Flybudy Loran wanted by Roger Long
Yes, really. Our Apollo 800 Flybuddy put it's little tits up in the air today and started waving its legs weakly. I actually like this unit for VFR flying. No distracting moving maps and temptation to hunker down in the cockpit. Distance and bearing, what more do you need? A lot of our members...

Lightspeed Headset Update by Kevin Kubiak
Well after sending my Lightspeed 30-3g back for the 3rd time, I finally got a brand new pair free of charge from Lightspeed. I purchased them originally at OSH this year, and only had 20hrs total time on them. Per Jay Honeck's suggestion, I spoke to Alan Schrader after sending them for the second...

New tool to check TFRs by Bill
We put up a new website just yesterday for anyone to check TFRs before a flight. Unlike most TFR searches that let you examine an area around a point, this lets you check along a route. You can put in TKI-ATL and you'll find that little TFR along the way. It's free for anyone to use, so go to...

Anti-Av Forces by john smith
Notice how the anti-aviation activists get real quiet when a disaster occurs in their neighborhood and aviation comes to their rescue? Beautiful weather in the NW! by tom pettit
A big ol' high pressure has taken over the Northwest and I've been flying! Yesterday I rolled out the Savannah and headed for the Oregon coast. I flew straight to Siletz airstrip, got rid of excess coffee and then headed up the coast. At 1000 MSL I could watch sea lions, gulls, pellicans, and...
