FAA: Runways come up short by
Andrew Sarangan
The FAA says runways without a 1000-ft overrun area are unsafe. The
solution? Extend the overrun by shortening the runway. That sounds
fishy to me. What am I missing here?

Cirrus... is it time for certification review? by
john smith
With the recent spate of Cirrus accidents, the question arises, "Is it
time for a special certification review?"
In the last twenty years, four general aviation aircraft have been
subjected to special certification review following a series of
accidents. The Cessna 210, Piper Malibu, Beech...

Flying Club software? by
Medic
Hi All,
I'm doing some research into the software flying clubs use for logging
flights and aircraft usage.
Am really interested in understanding what software clubs are using and
what features are important?
I assume that at some basic level clubs record the flight time, engine
on time and other...

My Third Solo X-Country by
CareBear
Well I did another xc solo today. The flight was from 3A1 (Cullman, AL) to
CTJ (Carrollton, GA), to BHM (Birmingham, AL) and back to 3A1.
The leg to CTJ was kinda long (70 minutes) but it was relaxing. Flying to
BHM from CTJ was rather interesting. The sun was shining bright right at
me. ...

How many instruments can I use for VFR? by
Mxsmanic
How many instruments am I allowed to use for VFR flight (for purposes
of exams)? Is it okay to use VORs to find my way, or do I have to fly
exclusively using landmarks without any radionavigation?

Stories Like this Bug Me by

"More than half of U.S. commercial airports don't have a 1,000-foot margin

needed as a safety zone, according to a new report."

Crosswind rental limits? by
nrp
A relative is working on a PPL using a Diamond DA20. The FBO has a
policy of no student solos with more than 5 knots crosswind component.
Do other FBOs do this? As a result he is having trouble scheduling his
solo cross countries.

Maydays this weekend by
Nathan Young
Flying home this weekend (Eastern Tennessee to Chicago) I heard
airliners relaying two separate Maydays for light GA planes.
One of the planes went down, contact was lost, and an ELT was
activated.
The other went down in a field, and was apparently in good enough
shape to relay to the airliner...

The Airnav fuel report says the highest avgas price in the country
right now is $7.42.

It didn't take long to find out where. Atlantic Aviation at Teterboro

breathtaking!

Ok, I jumped the gun and asked six months ago (maybe more) if anyone is
going to Palm Springs for the AOPA convention...
Since it's now only 1 day away, I'll ask again: Anyone going?

Warning: 25' wide, 1800' long by
Andrew Gideon
I was circling over N85 in my partnership's non-retractable 182,
considering landing. Someone had just landed there (on runway 26). He
suggested that I might want to consider 31, given the wind direction, if I
was "up to it".
"Up to it"?
I've landed at N85 a few times, but never on this...

Todays Cost of getting a PPL by
john smith
After reading John's (BucFan) posting and the revelation that he spent
$12,500 to get his PPL, I have to wonder how representative this is?
It certainly is daunting, to say the least.
Is this is true, it is certainly a factor in the decline in pilot starts
and completions.

What essentials do you always have on board? by

What things do you consider it essential to always have on board for
every flight? Not just things required by law, but things that you
personally believe in having on the aircraft before you leave the
ground.
