Can ATC assign an airway if filed direct? by
Andrew Sarangan
If you file to a VOR direct, can ATC clear you along an airway
instead, and expect you to look up the airways? In other words, how
important is to carry an enroute chart if you don't plan on using
airways?

Instrument Checkride on May 17th by
David B. Cole
On Saturday my instructor and I flew to Stewart International in
Newburg, NY for a few approaches. The plan was to fly out and do the
VOR -27 partial panel a couple of times, followed by an ILS. After
that we planned to fly to 4N1, Greenwood Lake, before returning to
CDW. Partial panel holding had...

Cruise clearance by
Hankal
How many times do you get a cruise clearance. Ever get "unable"
Lets say the cloud layers are 4000 to 5200. You are cleared to 5000, but want
to climb to 5300 or above. Is it possible to get a "cruise" clearance to stay
above the layers? What about over class B?

IR without actual IMC by
Iain Wilson
Anyone IR without having actually flown in IMC? My checkride is around the
corner and I've no actual IFR yet. I'm itching to experience it but the
damned weather isn't co-operating (seemed the same way with the PPL!).

How high is that cloud? by
Tim Hogard
I picked up a cheap infarred themometer a few days ago and discovered
that it will happily tell me the temperature of the clouds if they
are low.
It seems to me that the temp gradiant from the ground is well known
and if its consistant, this device combined with a table could tell
me how low the...

backup for vacuum pump/attitude indicator failure by
Kelly
I would be interested in getting opinions about backup systems for a
vacuum pump failure and/or AI failure. I have a 172P with a single
vacuum pump system, standard instruments otherwise, and a Garmin 430.
I am most concerned about having a good backup if I lose a vacuum pump
or AI in IMC. I have...

Lowest Cost GPS IFR system? by
tom pettit
I'm currently flying VFR in a vfr equipped plane. What would be the lowest
cost GPS based instrument system I could install and be legal for IFR
flying?
I looked through the last six months of this newsgroup, but didn't see a FAQ
or the answer to the above, so I hope it won't be something that...

CAT IIIC minimums by
Andrey Serbinenko
A question: the landing minimums section for ILS CAT-III approaches
may have separate lines for A, B, and C. In some cases the C line
has an "NA" for visibility, and on some other plates the whole C
line is missing. So, what's the difference? Does "NA" mean "not
authorized", i.e. CAT-IIIC cannot be...

Light gun work with ATC COMS - Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw2XtN15qOA
Two weeks ago I was with a friend who had COM failure and that was my
first experience with light guns. Because of this, I thought it would
behoove me to brush up on my experiences in a plane.
I posted my experiences...

Abrupt Controller by
Kobra
Flyers,
I'll run this scenario past the group and see what you all think and is if
Mr. McNicoll can shed some light as well.
First, some quick background. At my airport if you are IFR and are heading,
say, southwest (as I was) it's too bad...you're clearance is to send you 22
miles north to a...

Any W&B calculators that work in 640x480 on HP4700 PDA? by
Jose
I am after a simple W&B calculator for a PDA, with a few E6B
calculations (density altitude, say) but nothing else.
Try CoPilot, for the palm. It does more than just w&b, but you don't
have to use it. IT is outstandingly excellent though.

Good Place To Get Jeppesen Enroute Charts? by
NW_Pilot
Jeppesens web site really is not user friendly when looking for Just 1 Low
Enroute Chart anyone know of a place in the states that has a great
selection "World Wide" and that will sell and ship just 1 or 2 charts at a
time? Thanks!

Mounting a turn coordinator on the tail? by
Tim Auckland
(Things are so slow in this group at the moment, I thought I'd post
this to get your input on something I've been mulling over...)
If you put a plane into a skidding left turn (wings level) with left
rudder, the ball on the panel goes to the right.
However, I've been trying to work out what would...

GNS430 Without the IAF by
Jerry
Hello,
Here's a situation that keeps coming up: I'm coming home to SQL
and want to fly the GPS30
approach. Like many GPS approaches, this one looks like the letter
"L". The corner of the L
is AMEBY, and 5 miles later after that is the FAF, CUZUP.
AMEBY is not an IAF, but that doesn't stop...

Jepps airport and VOR names ... how used? by
akiley
Question A: I'm trying to get fast and accurate at programming routes
(and possible reroutes) into the KLN94 and G1000 navigators our club
planes are equipped with. I was wondering, does ATC usually give you
the VOR 3 letter ID or the full name? If it's the full name and it's
unfamiliar...

Garmin 430 by
[email protected]
I have a VFR only 172 and I am considering IFR training.
I am looking for the most practical way to make my plane IFR certified
and useful.
At first glance, it appears to me that the Garmin 430 provides a LOT of
useful information for relatively not much money.
I have 2 questions though....

Prepping for IR checkride - questions by
Paul Folbrecht
Hello all,
I've made the appointment for my IR checkride, although it's still a
ways out, and had a couple things on my mind.
1) Concerning the heading standards (+- 10 degrees, of course), I find
that I still, at this point, _occasionally_ exceed them, _especially_ in
prepping for an approach...

IFR checkride in IMC: PASSED! by
gatt
When the weather is bad and the examiner gives you the option of delaying
for better weather, don't say "Well, if I can't pass my checkride in IMC I'm
probably not qualified for the IFR rating."
First attempt at the checkride. Icing forecast at 6,000. Examiner said
"No problem. We probably...

Chicago VFR throughway by
Stuart King
Chicagoans...please advise ...
What about flying from North to South along the shore.
Then cross between Midway and O'Hare at 1500MSL.
Then continue south, after flipping the bird to Mayor Dick Daley.
Is this the way, or is there something like the Hudson river VFR corridor ?
