1925-dirigble target towing by
old hoodoo
I just read that the Shenadoah towed a target for the USS Texas anti-aircraft guns with success. The target was 50' long 10' in
diameter and was peppered by the Texas at 3000 feet. An interesting use for the lighter-than air ship.

F2A-3 ventral window? by
old hoodoo
I have seen conflicting references as to whether the F2A-3 had the ventral window. Does anyone know for certain. I have yet to
find an F2A-3 photo showing the belly.

ussr vs germany air by
old hoodoo
Has anyone done any speculation if the Germans could have recovered from the Kursk disaster if they had not had so many fighters
placed towards the west in 1943 and 1944, or had the Russians already achieved a measure of tactical air superiority, both with
their own aircraft and the aircraft...

air battles over normandy? by
old hoodoo
I have heard mention of air battles over normandy--or german attempts to attack the normandy beaches- after D-day but I have never read anything on the subject. The only thing mentioned is the two sorties by Fw-190's on D-Day. Did the Germans belatedly attempt to attack the normandy beaches and...

japanese war crimes-- was hiroshima by
old hoodoo
They were the bad guys, thats a given. That is not the issue. The issue is, did we, the good guys, go down to the bad guys level.
Its my understanding that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were targeted because they were undamaged cities... it had nothing to do with their military production capacity.

google lousy military/history search engine by

I often see people complaining that they google and can't find stuff.
Yahoo has always been a reliable search engine for military/history stuff.
No one ever seems to gripe about yahoo the same way.

enola gay and military aviation -serious by
old hoodoo
JMO:
The Enola Gay and Bockscar are valuable in that they remind us of how any
war becomes a vicious cycle, the upgrading of weapons as the war occurs, and
the willingness of even the "good guys" to justify increased atrocities to
win that war. Atrocities by good guys often occur when the...

:-) let enola gay drop one more :-) by

For a reinactment, lets let Enola Gay drop one more...maybe in the Northwest
Area of Pakistan...(we could use one of Pakistan's nukes and justify it as a
nuclear test)....maybe we will get lucky. Osama wants nuclear war anyways
so lets give him a taste. Think of the backdrop of a nuke with all...

fw-200 not "lost" by
old hoodoo
Although I had originally heard that the Fw-200 that was exstensively
damaged in the attempt to raise it and was virtually totally destroyed, it
appears that the project has just been made more difficult, not impossible.
Hopefully in about 10 years the example will be on permanent static...

On topic: A-Bomb necessary? A different approach? by
old hoodoo
JMO:
The only issue about the Nagasaki and Hiroshima is if it is justifiable in
war to one child in the hopes that more children will be saved overall
and/or if a single soldier is more valuable than a single child. A basic
morality question.
To me, its a question of responsibility. I...

comparing russian and US jet engines OH times by

I just read where Russian Su-30 engines are intended to operate 300 hours
before major overhaul. How do US engines compare? 300 hours seems awfully
short to a layperson like me.

any chance for a Tu-95 in US museum? by
old hoodoo
Considering we have flown a B-52 to Russia as a symbol of goodwill (I
guess). I have always hoped that we might be able to obtain a Tu-95 for
permanent display in a US museum as it was so prominently used and
intercepted by US aircraft in the cold war. Has anyone ever heard of an
attempt to get a...

Why were the George and Jack so slow? by
old hoodoo
It seems like, with available hp the WWII George and Jack should have been
faster (specs on new a/c). Both are commonly referred to as being in the 360
mph class under optimum conditions. Yet they had high hp engines with four
bladed props. Bad airfoils? Too much frontal cross section? ...
