17 Dec 03 -- Some Observations by
Jim Weir
Good morning, all...and some quick observations before I hit the sheets for a
long winter's snooze...having arrived home an hour ago from two weeks of
across-the-country driving:
1. 7000 miles autodriving ain't one TENTH as much fun as flying.
2. 7000 miles autodriving is TEN times as much more...

Hiking and Flying in the Northeast by
Ken
Does anyone know of any airports reasonably close to hiking trails in
the Northeast? I know of Black Moshannon State park near Mid state
airport in Pennsylvania but was wondering about others. Trying to
combine two of my interests.
Thanks,
Ken

why even have windows, re new Boeing Jet by
Rob Mohr
Why even bother to have windows in a commercial jet?
A Boeing press release makes note of the larger than usual windowns
for their new 7E7 jet. Late model jets are full of video screens at
each seat. Why not use snythetic views of the outside? The view from
a window is limited. With video, all...

Any ADC vets here? Question about SAGE by
ShawnD2112
I recently discovered a beuatiful little treasure in the form of a National
Geographic from Sept 65, the majority of which is a huge article on the US
Air Force at the time. The opening article was written by Gen LeMay who had
just retired. It was SAC's glory days, there were 800,000 people in...

Security by
MC
Australian politions have decided to upgrade our
aviation security with things like ;
- Air-marshals on (so far) some international flights.
- Strengthening cockpit doors on all RPT aircraft.
- Making airport owners responsible for extra ground security.
- Having the spooks do background checks on...

AVIATIONTOOLBOX: Christmas sectionals are here and rsync-able. by
Kyler Laird
Somehow the FAA forgot to send me the last batch of sectional DVDs
and by the time I finally called about it they didn't have any
remaining. I was told to wait for the next batch. It's here.
This batch doesn't become effective until December 25, 2003, but
because the previous batch has expired,...

"Wright replica fails to get off the ground" by
Mike
Wright replica fails to get off the ground
One hundred years to the day after Orville and Wilbur Wright soared
into history on man's first powered flight, modern-day aviators sought
to duplicate the feat, with a little help from 21st-century technology
and supercomputers. They flopped badly.

AVIATIONTOOLBOX: alpha version of route mapping tool by
Kyler Laird
I took a little bit of a break after creating the tools to generate
normalized "chunks" from sectional images.
http://aviationtoolbox.org/munge/mosaic
Over the holidays I got back into it and tackled doing something
useful with those chunks. I already revealed my map_image tool which
generates an...

How about worst looking airliner? by
Andrew Burke
Of the current crop, I'd say the Beech 1900D. Nose wheel RIGHT at the nose,
the cockpit looks like it's from another plane, as does the passenger door,
all those appendages around the tail...

Mooney busts NY airspace by
Roy Smith
Wonderful front-page story in (of all places) today's New York Post
about a guy in a Mooney who sounds like he busted the NY Class B with
style and ended up with an armed escort home.

TFR shapefile? by
Kyler Laird
It looks like the BLM has a shapefile for all of the TFRs but they only
share it with "BLM members who are logged in".
http://airspace.blm.gov/mapping/blm/tutorial.html
Anyone know of another source for this information? (I'd also like to
hear why they're restricting access to this.)
Thank...

What are you leaving... by
EDR
I do some of my best thinking while flying along in the Champ at 500
feet AGL.
The latest realization to hit me was, "What am I going to leave behind
in the way of an aviation legacy?"
Photographs are one of the easiest most efficient ways to share our
flying experiences with other, so that is one...
