"Long Cross-Country" flight for commercial rating - must it be completed in one day? by Marty Ross
I would like to use a flight I took two years ago to show I've satisfied the "Long Cross Country" requirement for my Commercial ticket. On that flight, I flew from SMO to O22 (259NM), then to (124NM) in one day, then turned around several days later and flew back - CIC to SZP (353 NM) to SMO...

Cananian airspace by Mike Rapoport
What type of airspace is the restricted airspace north of Vancouver Island. Flightmap lists it as COMOX and says that it reaches from 18,000MSL to Unlimited. It is big, about 165nm on the NS axis and 110nm EW. What are my chances at getting cleared through it at FL240? Thanks! Mike MU-2

The FAA is marching toward sole dependence on GPS. by WolfRat
The FAA is marching toward sole dependence on GPS. The FAA engineers and controllers are screaming from the mountaintops PLEASE do not single thread North American airspace navigation on satellite only. Yes GPS is awesome. Yes GPS has and will change our lives. But the signal is small and...

Autopilot use during approach by Ron Gordon
I've moved up to a new plane that includes an S-Tec 50 autopilot. It has several very capable modes ranging from Wings Leveler, Track a Heading bug, Follow NAV input, Hold a set Altitude, and approach mode which tracks NAV input more closely. What do the regs say about the permissible use of an...

Looks like XMradio weather is hitting the streets.. by Anonymous
Anyone looked at http://www.airgator.com/ ? Looks like one of the first portable WX systems based on XMradio broadcast technology. (http://www.wxworx.com) I don't suppose anyone has used this and could offer feedback? I wish AnywhereMap would change from the GlobalStar phones to this technology....

Opinions wanted: Accelerated Flight Training Center of Arizona by Ross Oliver
So I'm this close -- -- to finishing my IFR training (35 hours hood time, 10 hours simulator, written passed), but for the last 6 weeks have been frustrated by cancellations due to an early, wet California winter. So I am considering taking my plane to Arizona to finish up. Google turned up a...

FAA pulls funding for LAAS landing systems by JJ
LAAS (Local Area Augmentation System) was to provide CAT 2 and 3 ILS capability at major airports by fine tuning GPS and up loading correction signals to aircraft. FAA has canceled the program. Looks like the ground based ILS systems once slated for removal by 2010 are here to stay.

Logging Right Seat Time by CloudyIFR
I'm a Part 135 pilot and we're starting to get a lot of missions that are two pilot crews. These are in airplanes that don't require a SIC as the AutoPilots work, we're not flying over 8 hours and it's not required by the Type certificate. I'm a Captain in all the planes but move to the right...

System Operation of Aircraft System by [email protected]
On most modern turbo charged engines, the position of the waste gate is governed by a pressure-sensing control mechanism coupled to an actuator. engine oil directed into or away from this actuator moves the waste gate position. On these systems, the actuator is automatically positioned to produce...

IFR through Detroit Class B by Andrew Sarangan
I am planning a trip to PTK (Oakland County) which is about 25 miles north of Detroit. I will be coming from the south. The route is V493 to CRL and then direct to the PSI VOR. Planned altitude is 6000'. This will take me almost directly overhead the DTW airport. What are the chances of...

The new Instrument Rating PTS by C J Campbell
There seems to be a lot of questions regarding the new instrument rating PTS. Although it was published in April, it does not take effect until October. The purpose of the new PTS is to incorporate advanced technology such as electronic flight displays and GPS into the program. The "Aircraft and...

Meigs Class D Airspace by Defly
previous threads about Meigs Class D. I called my local FSDO (Grand Rapids, MI) who had no idea why the Class D is still depicted on the Chicago Sectional, and suggested I call NACO. I did and left a message. I got a call back this AM from Tony Selve at Naco who says the airspace will not be...

Instrument checkride (long) by Vitaly Shmatikov
I've been lurking here for a while, and I thought I'd share my experiences on the instrument checkride today, as they may be useful to someone. This was my 1st attempt (I did an unofficial evaluation checkride with the examiner a few days prior). I fly a Cessna 172S out of PAO. My examiner today...

bad vectors, no hand off by Lurker
Flyers, I just want some of your thoughts on this. My plane partner and I went out last night to do some practice instrument approaches. He wore the hood and I was the right-seat safety pilot. ATC was not too busy and it was a nice VFR night. First, after we asked for a practice ILS 24 into...

Textual IAPs by Marty Ross
I can relate to the problem here. It seems like such a waste of paper (and money!) to be buying all of these charts every 28 or 56 days! I don't even use most of them! Moreover, there are MANY MANY NOTAMS and other "updates" that don't seem to make it into them, so I have a lot of updates to do...
