St. Helens alert by
C J Campbell
The prediction now is for a much bigger eruption than originally expected. I
would strongly discourage sightseeing trips in the area.
One of the things that really bothers me is the crowds of people that have
come to see the mountain. They are sitting in the middle of literally miles
of downed...

Mt. Saint Helens by

Scientists are now predicting a 70% chance of Mt. Saint Helens erupting and
throwing rocks as far as three miles away. Pilots flying in the area should
steer clear of the crater.

Dear CBS by
C J Campbell
After decades of one-sided hatchet jobs, reporting gaffs, and programming
that appeals to no one with an IQ over 60, you are suddenly worried about
your reputation?
Dan Rather's ill-considered attacks on small airports and general aviation
pretty much reduced your reputation to something less than...

Looks like the C-141 is going away. I assume that the C-17 and
some form of Boeing cargo jet (7E7 or 767) will take its place.
Oh, 'passing.' I had these odd visuals....

Don't forget to pre-flight your frabulator! by
C J Campbell
Yesterday someone had left the TV on and I as I was taking a short break I
saw that the TV soap "Days of Our Lives" had an aviation sequence on it. It
had two guys flying a civilian twin somewhere; I have no idea what the plot
was, but it was no doubt incredibly silly.
Anyway, they are apparently...

Carb ice by
C J Campbell
I was flying with an instrument student yesterday (she is almost done) and
she noted that the engine was running rough and turned on the carb heat.
Sure enough, the engine began running so rough that the cowl was shaking. I
hoped it would go away as we continued toward Tacoma Narrows, but it did...

Does this look familiar? by
C J Campbell
The RC model B-52 that was the subject of a popular video circulating around
the Internet recently has crashed. :-( It looks like the pilot stalled it in
a steep turn, rather like the terrible crash at Fairchild. A real shame;
someone had put a lot of work into this...

The price of gas by
C J Campbell
So oil is now over $40/barrel and this is being blamed for the fact that gas
is now over $2/gallon and avgas is well over $3/gallon.
As one news report put it, oil is the most expensive it has been since the
1970's. Ummm, anyone remember what the price of gas was in the 1970's when
oil was pushing...

Flying Friday through the TFRs by
C J Campbell
I had several flights scheduled for Friday. The first one in the morning did
not go; my CFI student and I spent the whole lesson discussing how to teach
students how to preflight an airplane.
The second was our scheduled air taxi service to Roche Harbor. We left at
1:00 pm so the TFR did not...

The frustrating economics of aviation by
C J Campbell
Okay, we have gone 'round and 'round about why new airplanes cost so much:
low demand, liability, inefficient manufacturing, regulatory requirements,
etc. It is so daunting that Toyota appears to have scrapped its GA project.
Perhaps one reason demand is so low is because of the cost of becoming...

TFRs and ADIZ: The Final Solution by
