Laister Sailplanes: 1938 Yankee Doodle - LK-10 - LP-49 - LP-15 Nugget by [email protected]
Jack Laister was passionate about soaring throughout his 93 years, and his contributions were enormous. Here is a thumbnail of some of the gliders we associate with him today. (From various sources on the web.) 1938 "Yankee Doodle" Laister-Kauffmann LK-10A ( USAAC TG-4A) In 1938 Laister completed...

new Soaring article by John Cochrane[_2_]
I wrote an article for Soaring, that will appear in the July issue. Title: "Gizmo Future." A somewhat unusual view of the "what's in the future for Soaring" kind of article. It's on my webpage if you just can't wait for...

Affect of Alcohol (Beer) on Soaring and Soaring Racing by [email protected]
I know Sebastian Kawa and a few others never touch alcohol. Some racing pilots stay away around competitions. Others have a beer waiting on ice when they land. Is it just a high performance athlete focusing thing - or is there more to it. I did a search and couldn't fined any discussions. WH

Flight Analysis with NMEA GPS Data File by jchutch
I have a handy little BlueTooth GPS logger. I can download files and then display on GPSVisualer.com, but would love to be able to use soaring programs to analyze in greater detail. GPSBabel does not support icg, and programs like SeeYou do not appear to accept NMEA or types of files generated by...

Q about mic wiring by ken ward
I see that for my Peiker dynamic mic, the red wire typically connects to the MIC pin of the radio, and the yellow wire (with or without the braided shield) typically connects to the MIC GND of the radio. In a typical installation, do people actually run a coax type wire with a shielded braid (or...

Video of off-field landing from cockpit by Bruno[_2_]
Hey everyone. We had a fun weekend up in Utah with many gliders up in the air enjoying the amazing fall colors and mountain scenery. At the end of Friday's flight I decided to extend the flight and go play out in the weak wave lift in the valley northeast of the Logan airport. It was fun until it...

Dittel radio Q by ken ward
I have one of the older rectangular box Dittels. They slide into a tray which mounts to the panel. To secure the radio box to the tray, there's a screw which pivots a little aluminum tab into a locking position. My aluminum tab is stripped out. Where can I get a replacement? I guess I could...

Mayday in Utah by [email protected]
Today (June 11) Oakland Center asked the Global Hawk Test Team to help with a Mayday call from a motorglider in Utah. The team was flying a new Global Hawk somewhat above 50,000 feet north of Edwards AFB and was 8 hours into a 30 hour mission to test the sensor suite when OAK Center made the...

Round out and flare with fully open spoilers in a PW-6? Other gliders? by son_of_flubber
The PW-6 has very effective spoilers, and some other gliders have even more effective spoilers. Assuming C.G. is within limits and runway is level, is it possible to round out and flare with the spoilers fully open? Does one need extra airspeed? How much extra? (Yep. I know it is advisable to...
